Do you prefer to be called by a shortened version of your name, or, did someone give you a 'nickname' that 'stuck'?

When I was about 11/12 years old, a Spanish lady and her daughter Francesca moved into our street. I dubbed Francesca, 'Frankie', and the name caught on....and more importantly, she loved the name.

Within a year, Frankie and her mother went back to Spain, and I thought that that was the last I'd hear from her.......until about 6 months after, when, my Mum put a letter on thetable next to me when I was eating my porridge, "It's got a foreign stamp on it", my Mum said, "Who do you know that lives in another country?"
We became pen-pals and we shared letters for many years though never meeting again, until about 10 years ago. Frankie was on holiday in the UK with her Daughter and Son-in-law, who wantedto visit places of interest, but Frankie tracked me down and came to visit me.
There was a knock on my door, and when I opened it, there was Frankie.....smiling.....and....."Hello Bill."
I gulped and heard myself saying, "Well, well, what a surprise, hello Francesca."
"I'm Frankie, Bill, you of all people should know that," she smiled, with the same dimples in her face that I remembered from so long ago. :D

How did William become Bill?

And how did Richard become Dick?

And, how did.......hmmmmm......come on, give me some of your 'Short Names'?

My name is Barbara Ann but for most of the time I've been called Bab's or Barb.Only when I was in school the Nun's always called me Barbara Ann..

Family call me Lil. Friends call me Lillian or Lily. My father called me Pinky, like my paternal grandfather did.

My name is Richard. Growing up I went by "Dick". It was a 1940-50s thing. Now about that nickname. There is another meaning for it. It's hard not to be the butt of raunchy puns, and jokes. I've known people, who just couldn't say "Dick". So, I became "Richard". Everybody is happy.

My legal is James but everyone knows me as Jim. I was married for 17 years to a "Frankie". My wife's name is Detta and it is her legal name too.

I'll answer to just about anything that isn't obscene.

How did Peggy become a nickname for Margaret?

Peggy is my middle name...named after both grandmothers who were Margaret

It seems like there should be a long explanation for Daisy, but it's as simple as this: The French word for "daisy" is "marguerite."

As for Peggy? Well, Margaret was shorted to nicknames like Meg or Meggy, and the rhyming nickname trend turned Meggy into Peggy.

"Ike' is not a made up nickname for internet and forum use for me, everyone has actually called me 'Ike' since I was a mid teen.....'Ike' is sort of an abbreviation for my last name, I found out later in life that my dad was also called 'Ike' by those close to him.

I'm Patricia on my birth certificate, I totally prefer Pat and unless its legal its the name I use for everything.
My older brother had a way of calling me Patricia that made me nuts, always felt I was in trouble.
Patty,Trish,Tish never felt right to me.
Funny story, my daughter, born in 79 is
named Jamie, because I liked the name,Elizabeth for my deceased Mom,fast forward 25+ years and my son,who arrived in 81 met the girl,he would marry, name,Jamie Elizabeth, so now there's 2 with the exact same name, first, middle last...so now my conundrum is to figure what to call them..
BTW,they also live less than 5 minutes apart.
So 1 of them is Jay,the other Jamie sometimes reversed, her mom calls them miss and mrs jamie,my daughter isnt currently married although there's a significant other, wish she'd hurry up,it will lessen the confusion, lol

My mother was Margaret, but always known as Peggy. My middle name is Alexander and apparently if I had fair hair, I would have grown up as 'Sandy'. It's a very common name here and most are called 'Sandy' - occasionally 'Alex'.

I don't hear it much here, but anyone called Hugh is often known as 'Shuggy'.

My grandkids call me "Papa" because when they were little they could not manage "grandpa". They are now in their mid-20s, but I am still "Papa".

In the Navy the southern boys called me "Slim", because I was skinny. The northern boys called me "Willie" after a notorious bank robber who had the same last name.
