Short Names

When I was about 11/12 years old, a Spanish lady and her daughter Francesca moved into our street. I dubbed Francesca, 'Frankie', and the name caught on....and more importantly, she loved the name.
Within a year, Frankie and her mother went back to Spain, and I thought that that was the last I'd hear from her.......until about 6 months after, when, my Mum put a letter on thetable next to me when I was eating my porridge, "It's got a foreign stamp on it", my Mum said, "Who do you know that lives in another country?"
We became pen-pals and we shared letters for many years though never meeting again, until about 10 years ago. Frankie was on holiday in the UK with her Daughter and Son-in-law, who wantedto visit places of interest, but Frankie tracked me down and came to visit me.
There was a knock on my door, and when I opened it, there was Frankie.....smiling.....and....."Hello Bill."
I gulped and heard myself saying, "Well, well, what a surprise, hello Francesca."
"I'm Frankie, Bill, you of all people should know that," she smiled, with the same dimples in her face that I remembered from so long ago.
How did William become Bill?
And how did Richard become Dick?
And, how did.......hmmmmm......come on, give me some of your 'Short Names'?
