Shot Heard Round the World

April 19th will be here this Sunday, the start of the Revolutionary War. My 6th ggf was there at Concord and Lexington with his Uncle from his father's side, Nathaniel Page. Nathaniel's house was in Bedford (still is ) and from there he and his nephew, Josiah Page age apprx 22yrs traveled to the battle.

I have most of Josiah's mustering in and then of his short leaves to return home to manage his farm and blacksmithing. His papers are discripitve and interesting. He was designated as a 'scout' and he carried a boreless long gun.

He was raised by Nathaniel and his wife from the time he was 4 yrs as an indentured person as his father died when Josiah was 4 yrs old. He was treated well and educated; they were family. Josiah was the last of 10 kids so I can understand why she sent him to Nathaniel.

It would be interesting to know how many of you have anestors in the Revolutionary War.

That is fascinating, especially having actual papers describing his role. Being listed as a scout must have put him right at the edge of things. It really brings April 19th to life in a way a history book can’t. It makes you realize how many ordinary people stepped into something truly extraordinary.

I don’t have a documented ancestor from that time but wouldn't be shocked to find an ancestor served in that conflict. After all, my surname is of
Scottish origin, derived from the Gaelic term meaning "the love of the army." It has various spelling variations and was first found in Argyllshire, Scotland. And military service does run in my family. In fact, I served a 20yr military career but absolutely do not think anyone will be talking about it ~250yrs from now :ROFLMAO:

Do you know if any of your ancestor's original tools or belongings survived?

As far as I know there is nothing from them. The tv show This Old House did a reno of Nathaniels's house on 89 Page Rd in bedford several yrs ago. They mucked up some of the inside not to my liking but what can I do?? The ouside is ok and looks the same. Why does every single woman have to have an island in the kitchen????? I imagine somewhere there is something.
