Should Hinckley be released?

He has been in a mental hospital for decades after trying to assassinate President Reagsn, A judge is releasing him to live with his ninety year old mother. The judge believes he is no longer a threat to anyone. This seems OK to me but some say that no one who tries to kill a president should ever be set free...

I was surprised to hear that too. I guess they have evaluated him, least I hope so! What I can't understand is how some killers get away with under 20 yrs for their crime. Seeing more sentences like that. Mixed feelings. Yes, I understand premeditation, but some of these murders are so brutal. I sure hope if they release him that he really isn't a threat to anyone.

As far as high profile cases go I guess releasing Hinckley is safer or more warranted than releasing the Manson member Van Houten who succeeded in killing people.

I would have said it should be the choice of James Brady and his wife but they've both passed on.

That probably was a consideration. I forget did the Secret Service agent who took bullets pass-McCarthy? You can rest assured since the Manson lady's victim's family is still around she won't be getting out anytime soon.

I forget what his actual sentence was. Was he sentenced to an actual finite number of years, or was he in there until he was "no longer a threat?"

I don't really think political assassins or potential assassins should be turned loose, no matter what the circumstances.
