Should the Torture Report be released?

It seems that it is supposed to be released today showing what methods were used by the U.S. to extract information from detainees at Gitmo, such as sleep deprivation and water boarding. Some of our leaders are concerned that this disclosure will put more of our citizens at risk for retaliation. I say let's keep it under wraps for now as we have done with other classified materials that might throw an unfavorable light on this country. Most nations have done things that they keep secret and this is just the way the world works. You have no choice but to agree with me.

It doesn't take much to inflame the 'Arab street', so I dare say there will be anti-American (and Western) attacks.

No matter how 'you' dress it up or strive to find 'greater good justifications' for it, torture is wrong. Any nations or individuals implicated in it are shamed by it.

I don't believe in torture, but factions that already hate us will use any excuse to take violent action. & will u
se that report as an excuse.

Since I have no choice, Ralphy, I agree with you. Two questions the president should have considered and didn't.

1. What do we have to gain by admitting to using torture?

2. What do we have to lose by admitting to using torture?

I think we have nothing to gain and a lot to lose

Yep, hide the truth that everyone already knows about. Makes perfect sense.

Do you really think hiding this report will suddenly make the ME countries love America? Taking into consideration Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Palestinians......I'm pretty certain that their feelings about the USA won't change.

So don't torture. Don't invade other countries for the sake of hegemony and control. Don't support terrorists with training and funding. Don't take down governments and replace them with puppets. Then maybe no one will have an excuse or even look for an excuse.

Hmmm, very interesting, Debby, but try not to get too nervous when you see unmarked vehicles parked near your house...

You have no choice but to agree with me.

As a 68 year old American, I most certainly DO have the choice to disagree with you!! This report is long overdue. The radical Muslim community is committed to killing every "infidel" anyway. What changes when this report is released??

The far right is crying that releasing the report puts Americans at risk of retaliation by the radicals. Huh?? How many Americans have been beheaded or killed this year by those same radicals? Everyone knows the extent the Bush administration went to in an attempt to extract information. I've still seen no proof that the information extracted was accurate and was instrumental in saving American lives. I've heard conjecture that the info led to finding OBL. If the info was so accurate, then why didn't the Bush crew get OBL?

This is nothing but another political hot button for Fox News and other pundits to rail about. Release the report. If it's not released now, the incoming Congress will continue to set on it. Get it out there. If there are retalitory efforts, confront them and defeat them. We are attempting to reduce the number of our sons and daughters who are in harms way in lands where we are hated anyway. Bring them home, then see the report come out in another couple of years. Boom! Now we redeploy troops to meet the generated crisis. Knock that crisis in the backside... NOW! Get on with bringing our troops home.

Up until the Truman Administration, we had a "Secretary of War". Since that time, that position has been renamed "Secretary of Defense". We seem to suffer through Presidential Administrations who would like to return us to "war first".... "defense last". If ISIS/ISIL threatens us... hit them with technology. If ISIS/ISIL beheads Americans... drone bomb them to the laps of their 72 virgins. This grabbing supposed terrorists off the street, shipping them to a clandestine base in Cuba, and torturing them until they finally give up bad info is NOT "defense".

No, I do NOT have to agree with you!!!!

Some things I do believe should be made public knowledge, this isn't one of them. How prisoners are treated in general, that I can understand information being released, but how information is extracted from an enemy, whom takes lives through bombings beheadings and so forth and various innocent lives are at stake, nope on a need to know basis as far as I'm concerned.

See and considering how America likes to pat itself on the back for it's compassion, fairness, freedom, etc., it is a travesty that your comment has an element of accuracy and truth to it. Next time America wants to point at some despot or even just another government as the epitome of evil, maybe they should remember the fingers pointing back at themselves ....... and stay home and let people solve their own problems or not, instead of causing or adding to them. Thanks Ralph for highlighting the attitude and actions.

Of course it should be released... and Bush and cronies declared war criminals.. Particularly Cheney.. I'm certainly not surprised it's being released now.. with the GOP holding majorities in both houses in January... that report would never see the light of day if we waited.

What you are all forgetting, we have no leaders at the moment and the current resident in the White House is just that, he lives there without serving any real purpose except to embarrass us in the eyes of the world and destroy any leadership position we may have had.

It's been the in the unofficial playbook for ever. Both sides know it. I don't think the consequences will be as severe as many are led to believe. If we don't want our people tortured we have no business torturing others. And it still will be in the unofficial dark playbook regardless of what anyone says.

I agree, it should be released.
