General George S. Patton slapped two US Army soldiers who were recuperating from battle fatigue in Sicily. The Army's attempt to suppress news of the incidents failed forcing General Eisenhower and Chief of Staff Marshall to act. Patton was not fired but he was ordered to apologize to the men he berated and struck. Patton believed that he was shocking the soldiers out of their weakening condition. But history has shown that Patton was a better field commander than a mental health provider.

Mikhail Gorbachev received a slap across the face from a disgruntled citizen in 1996. While on a campaign trip in Omsk a 29 year old by the name of Mikhail Malyukov slipped past the security detail and planted one on Gorbachev's check. Malyukov was sentenced to a mental institution for about 2 years but he most likely was not crazy and just annoyed with Gorbachev's policies that lead to the demise of the Soviet Union. He was not alone.

Take that!

If a poet slaps a novelist in the woods - does it still hurt? - Anonymous

Even a world famous Russian novelist like Alexey Tolstoy is not safe from the open hand strike. Over some silly dispute over rubles and a wine purchase (but apparently honor was also involved - never a good thing), the poet Osip Mandelstam connected Tolstoy with a right hook, taking the novelist by surprise and annoying him to no end. Not a smart thing to do against someone with political connections. Mandelstam was arrested, exiled and later sent to a concentration camp where he eventually died.

Last year French President Emmanual Macron was slapped by a man as he waded through a crowd during one of his charm visits. The security detail intervened and arrested the slapper along with his sidekick who was recording the event.

my Dad, who served in WWII used to talk about Patton. I am pretty sure all the soldiers had words and criticisms of all the generals. Personally, I admire all of them. I think they literally saved the world and kept us all free.

I have to think there was more to it than this. Eisenhower and company must have wanted to push him aside for other reasons.

I think Patton was probably wrong in what he did, however if his leadership would have shortened the war by a single death he should have been left in place. Eisenhower knew that.

These guys had a slap-happy relationship…nyuck, nyuck, nyuck!

Wouldn’t it have been great if Will Smith and Chris Rock went into a Three Stooges routine instead of what happened? Imagine the slaps, eye-pokes, and bops on the head that could have happened between them…

Smith: “Oh, a wise guy, huh?” (Slaps Rock)

Rock: “Oww!” (Pokes Smith in the eye)

Smith: “I’ll moiderize you!” (Grabs Rock’s nose and twists it)

Rock: “You idiot!” (Grabs Smith’s hair and pulls it)

(And the Academy breaks into applause…) 😸👏
