Sleep Apnea...

Went to the doc yesterday. Heart sounds good, lungs the same. B/P OK a-tic high @ 142/82 but for me not unusual , B/sugar good...in previous tests, testosterone slightly low, thyroid good , etc.

Weight ?.....Horrible @ 282 !! I'm 6'1"...

We discuss my diet, even he says it is good...and the portions are actually on the small side. He says perhaps I am not sleeping well ? and that alone is why my weight continues to creep up ?!

I find this very hard to believe. I sleep very well, a solid 8-9 hours, no matter if I go to bed early say 11:30, or if I decide to stay up late 1-2am ...I still sleep 8-9 straight thru , and when I awake I feel fully rested. Feel great, until I stand and the old arthritis kicks in [pain]

There has to be something else that is effecting my weight. It seems like I have no metabolism at all anymore...& that coupled with my inability to exercise properly , and the pounds just keep adding.

Opinions on the Apnea aspect ?

Once the weight is off, sleep apnea should disappear completely. "Dr. Gundy's Diet Evolution" may sound like another gimmick but this did get my attention. I thought I'd already heard everything but this was new to me. Here he was, a cardiologist, but was 70 lbs overweight even though he ate right, ran 30 mile marathons, went to the gym everyday, etc. And yet couldn't get any of the 70lbs off. He had his lab do research and found that there are 4 foods you should never eat and one of them causes sugar & carb cravings as well.

I thought he wasn't going to tell what the 4 foods were unless you bought his book, but no. Half way through the talk he did go into details and I wrote it all down (copying and pasting the link wasn't allowed and you can't rewind except to the beginning). I haven't tried and tested it but it sure makes sense.

Each food requires an explanation. The first food item is somewhat lengthy but the 2nd-4th are short. If anyone is interested I'll devote a post per food item. Just let me know if you want to hear this diet information. Has anyone read his book and tried this?

Lara - I tried listening to Dr. Grundy's spiel but it was a lot too long for me - anything you can share would be greatly appreciated

As I mentioned, enough weightloss can make sleep apnea disappear. Here are all 4 Foods to Never Eat if you want to lose weight that just won't budge no matter what you do. Dr. Gundy gave extra info but this is the most important. Cut out (and add a supplement OR at least lower your intake of...) these 4 foods:
(the important info in the presentation starts at the halfway mark, Hoot)

1. Tomatoes have a high amount of Lectins which have incredibly bad side effects. They can penetrate the wall of your stomach causing leaky gut which leads to skin problems and joint issues as well. Dr. Gundy says, "Replace tomatoes with an oily fish (like salmon), olive oil, and protein (like chicken). You can [use moderation] or you can replace Lectins with supplements that restore endothelial function to normal, which in turn, can reverse high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity."

Eggplant, Bell Pepper, & Potatoes also contain high amounts of Lectins. Most Lectins are in the seeds & the peel. Italy uses a strainer to get rid of the seeds when making tomato sauce.

2. Beans...20% of all food poisoning comes from eating undercooked beans (I didn't know that). Beans have a very high concentration of Lectins.

3. Cashews...Cashews are not nuts. They are a bean! (I didn't know that either). They contain Lectins that make your skin break out. Peanuts aren't great for you either. Replace these with Almonds, Walnuts, Pistachios, or Macadamia nuts.

4. Grains...Brown bread or Wholegrains is worse than white bread because it has far more Lectins. "Our digestive process doesn't maximize the effectiveness of grain consumption (pigs are fed grain). Brown Bread (wholegrains) is the food I mentioned previously that will cause you to crave sweets, fast foods, and carbs.

***************************
BTW...only 1% of Americans are Gluten Intolerant. When people say they feel better when they cut out Gluten it's actually because they also cut out Lectins.

Tip...Extra Virgin Olive Oil has nutrients that can fight inflammation (don't cook with it on high heat, if it smokes it has turned to saturated fat...just use low heat or just sprinkle it on AFTER cooking)

*I have not tried and tested this so ask your doctor what he thinks if you'd like. It seems to make a lot of sense to me.

"inability to exercise properly"

Calories in should = calories out.

Laura...

Thank you for the information, here's the problem.

Tomatoes...gave them up sometime back, for the reasons noted. Still enjoy on occasion, but not really part of my diet any longer on a regular basis.

Beans...similar, in that I used to cook them with rice...rice is a B/sugar problem, so now beans alone...again only on occasion .

Cashews...gave them up due to calories , & dental . Do not eat at all , for several years now.

Grains....Again, dropped most bread for the reasons noted, and carb , processing .

And yet the weight continues to climb??

True, but we do need a certain amount of calories just to sustain life. And even the doc says I am not over doing it ? The trouble seems to be that my metabolism isn't burning what I do take in .

@ one point he even said....maybe you're not eating enough...enough to trigger your metabolism. I said Doc, if that were true wouldn't the Donner party still be with us ?

These are fantastic posts Lara .
Can’t give you any feedback
I’ve been told I need to spread it around some ... lol

LOL! The doc knows only what you tell him. The scales say you're putting on weight. You're telling him you're not eating enough for that. If the doc thinks you have a slow metabolism, you should be tested for it.

Oy, Lara-

My doc said to eat "brown "( type 2 Diabetes) because of less carbs and the fiber in brown bread break down the carbs, etc.

Good to know Rose. That's why I said in my post to check with your doctor because there are lots of different studies and opinions and I have not tried nor tested Dr. Gundy's claims. Although, as I mentioned, an over amount of Lectins causing obesity makes sense to me...and farmers do use whole grains to fatten up pigs.

I was studying LECTINS years ago and could not understand it all and recently a friend has gotten into high Lectin foods...for me I just gave up bringing all breads into my house probably close to 10 yrs ago. Started by going gluten free and found that bread too heavy and so why, just STOP. I use nice lettuce leaves for a sandwich wrap and know this helps keep weight down in my body/life. Getting older one of the pleasures is food but not the pleasure on extra weight. And I can't exercise and walk like I did for years before. so no breads...it's easy, so many people about their "love of bread"...not me. Bread does not love me.

I've never heard anything like this. I've always heard beans are one of the very best foods to eat when you're trying to lose weight. Beans have protein, are complex carbohydrates, take longer to digest, and therefore keep you from getting hungry. Works for me.

"More than just a meat substitute, beans are so nutritious that the latest dietary guidelines recommend we triple our current intake from 1 to 3 cups per week. What makes beans so good for us? ...

Beans are comparable to meat when it comes to calories, says Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD, a registered dietitian at Northwestern Memorial Hospital's Wellness Institute in Chicago and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. But they really shine in terms of fiber and water content, two ingredients that make you feel fuller, faster. Adding beans to your diet helps cut calories without feeling deprived."

I wonder how many here trying to lose weight exercise for 30 min/day. I will never lose an ounce if I don' exercise. I can drop 3-4 lbs./week if I do a total of 30 minutes on my stationary bike. After a week or so my metabolism is through the roof and I feel forced to o more than my 30 min/day.

If it works for you then that's wonderful and you should continue. Everybody's metabolism is different. Moderation is key especially when considering the high lectin content.

You've probably heard of "Livestrong"? A magazine and health website that is very reputable and popular. Here's what they have to say in an article titled "Beans for Weight Gain" https://www.livestrong.com/article/303110-beans-for-a-weight-gain-diet/. Keep in mind, there is the additional issue with Lectins not addressed in the article.

"Calories in Beans Promote Weight Gain

To gain 1 pound weekly, you’ll need to consume 500 extra calories every day. Beans can make a significant dent toward that goal [and are packed with nutrition]. Depending on the type of bean, 1 cup has between 200 and 300 calories.

Adzuki beans and chickpeas are good choices because they’re at the high end, with 294 and 269 calories per cup respectively. Soybeans, navy beans and white beans have between 249 and 254 calories in a 1-cup serving. All other beans fall between 200 and 250 calories per serving."

I also believe whole grains and beans are good for you but "moderation" is the key word for weight loss and even more moderation when you consider the high amount of Lectins in them.

This information is for people who have tried everything and nothing is taking off any weight because they are reacting to high Lectin amounts.

note to rgp - are you sure it isn't a Skyline Chili issue? :)

I wish it were, I haven't had Skyline since January. I still eat it, luv it, but limit it to about four times p/year....I'm due :)...but since the extra 5 pounds showed up....maybe I'll skip it...:(

So you're familiar with Skyline...hummm...are you an ex/pat Cincinnati'n ?

Well,..I am being honest with him, jotted down my meals. What is the 'test' for it ? How does one 'speed it up' ?
