If you visit one of the old castles or stately homes in the UK, you will see that the old beds are short and high off the floor. Being high was to avoid cold draughts, but beds were short because people would sleep sitting up. This was more a superstitious thing, because sleeping flat was associated with death. Full length beds came much later although some were still high off the floor. Some had small steps to aid getting in and out of bed.
