Small fiber peripheral neuropathy

My name is Phil. I am 73 yrs. old and have had neuropathic pain only in my feet since 2007. I tried all manner of treatments back then of which none worked. These treatments included various drugs which DID NOT WORK!! This was particularly true of the Gabapentin which gave me suicidal ideations. I do not have diabetes or lack of vitamin12. I have recently been seeing ads for special socks called soothesocks. Has anyone heard of these socks? If so did they work?

G'day youself Tish. Do you know of any particular brand which may work? Or, have you used them yourself? It would be great to get even 50% reduction in pain because my wife and I are going to London in June for our 47th. anniversary and some walking will be involved as well as standing in airport lineups for everything. Thanks for the prompt reply, Phil. P.S. Do you have the same problem as I do?

I too, have heard of them, but haven't tried them as yet. Like you phillip, I'll do almost anything to ease up that discomfort. But, right now, I am dealing with a pinched sciatic nerve, and that's more than enough on my platter.

Hello Lewkat; Thankyou for your reply. I guess that you must know that I only just joined the forum e few hours ago and already received one response from another torture victim. I am very sorry to hear of your sciatica problem because I had the same thing myself for years. I finally saw the right orthopod and he sent me for another MRI of my spine. The result came back very quickly and he said "you need an operation". I said "do it". He fused my L4-L5 vertebrae and connected them with some hardware as well. It took many months for the pain of the operation to subside but it was worth it. I hope that you will persue medical help before it gets worse, and it will! If I find something that works (like special socks) I will certainly let you know. Phil.

Thank you Tish. Love your growing old, growing up optional :) I will research this brand also and I assume that your friend has neuropathy in her feet as well and finds pain relief. By-the-By, I liked your "Roo. Nice touch.

Hi @philip ... welcome to the forum. I can't help with the socks issue, but I looked it up and I would suggest making your decision based on consumer reviews. There are a number of brands making the socks... some get great reviews and others not so good at all. Best of luck with finding something that helps you!

Welcome to the forum.

My husband and I bought compression socks from an orthotics shop in Canada. They were recommended for long flights. They are hard to get on but very comfortable to wear. They were expensive ($90 CAD per pair) but they are very well made.

I don't know if they will help you, but here is a link:

Thank you for your reply. I only joined this forum today but your's has been the 3rd. response already. I am going to try some socks and will certainly let you know if they provide any relief. Phil.

Hi Kate; Thanks for your reply. I am presently doing exactly what you suggest. I saw an online AD for " smoothesocks "and of course, am very sceptical of these types of ads. There are so many scams on the web that anyone even considering online purchases needs to perform their due diligence before diving in. Phil, Strathroy ON.

Thank you for your reply and the link. I will look into that source today. The fact that you mentioned that the socks were good for long flights is indeed fortuitous. I was talking to my wife just yesterday about the possible benefits of compression socks in this instance. In june this year, not having been able to travel for almost 4 years, we have booked our flight to London UK for our 47 th. wedding anniversary. From Toronto to London is 7 hrs. going and 8 hrs. coming back plus all the time waiting in lines. I'm sure you know the drill. Phil, Strathroy, ON.

@philip , I've had PN since 2011, sudden onset. Rather than pain I have mostly numbness in my feet, that creeps up the sides of my legs into my outer thighs. My Dr. wasn't listening to me, gave me Gabapentin even though my symptom was numbness, not pain. I took it for 3 weeks and hated it, so I discontinued it. I took B-12 suppliments for about a year, didn't see any improvement. I have not heard of the socks that you mention, but I used to wear a loose diabetic sock, even to bed as the bed sheets created an uncomfortable sensation on my feet.

Hi Nathan; It sounds like we have been, and still are, in the same boat ( RMS TITANIC ). I too cannot stand the weight of the bed sheet and comforter. I have not even been able to wear socks since the onset of this condition. I used to wear socks to bed because I didn't like cold feet!
I am now investigating the use of a CBD/THC cream to rub on my feet. It has been ordered today from Cannimed as I have a license for medical marijuana. My neuropathy has been confined to both feet equally which makes it more tolerable than is your case. After I receive delivery of the cream, I will try it for at least a week to determine if it works. I hope that I will have good news, not only for you but the many others would suffer from this debillitating condition.
Phil, Strathroy, Ontario.

Bonjour a tous...Reading all of this, a few points please

Expensive special socks are not the only choice, compression knee highs ...especaily the Nurses brand "Nursemates"
Calibrated veins compression socks in 10/15/25/30 mm calibrations.

Try to elevate the feet and legs when sleeping.

But beware! It is a symptom of deeper issues, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high BP, heart disease. Drugs will not fix and cause many bad side effects as do most.

Jon

Thank you Jon - all the way from Paris. I do not have any of the deeper issues noted above. I am a firm believer about not taking medication unless absolutely necessary as the side effects can be worse than the issue you are trying to correct. I hang my feet over the end of the mattress as the sheet/comforter are not bearable on my feet. I cannot wear socks for this same reason. My feet and legs are elevated when relaxing watching tv.

Hello @philip! Do you live in the U.S.? I've seen ads online for socks that ease the pain in feet, but have not tried them. Sounds like many of us need relief from foot pain.

Hello Ruby, Thanks for the welcome to the group. No, I'm a Canuck living in Ontario. I am considering compression sock but first I am going to try some CBD/THC cream on my feet. I have a license for medical weed but I don't smoke it. I was diagnosed with a sleep disorder my a licensed physician and as a result, I can purchase, online, many different canabis products. Since weed is now legal in Canada, I can even grow weed in my backyard--up to 4 big flower pots full. I have actually seen this. For this, I am glad to live north of the 49th. parallel. Merci beaucoup for the suggestion. Failing this, I will try the sock route although, since I have not been able to wear socks for about 16 yrs. it will be a long shot. Phil.
