So frustrated at the few self-entitled folks here...

People should keep in mind that there are hostile groups (often foreign powers) whose goal it is to use social media sites to sow discord, anger and even hatred in the USA and other countries. They want us hating and fighting each other. And, they are very good at what they do.

Matrix has my deepest sympathy if he is the only person doing guard duty on an international forum.

Even this thread is managing to turn political, in a wide sense of interpretation

There are people on here who are so unhappy in their own lives, they delight in sharing that with others. I either ignore you, go elsewhere, and of course I will pray for you, which always see seems to rankle you agitators of life😇😇😇.

Mine too. He's running the site alone, has never asked for a donation like many other owners do and forum ownership takes a lot of time.

That he'll get tired of it all and chuck it in is a worry. I was on a small hobby board with hardly any contention and the owner got tired of it and for some reason deleted the board. Some forums die out but are still online but this guy took his forum down. Pictures, threads with advice and resources recs were just one day gone.

There always have been, still are, and we will always have new members that dislike the NO POLITICS rule, that will continue to push against that direction. Their usual posts have essentially stated many times, "If one doesn't want to view politics, just ignore reading those posts". And the same members that have that view will post a thumbs up, so we know who they are. No, no, and NO. This has been thoroughly discussed and overwhelmingly rejected by the majority of SF members.
...

Couldn't get the thread link to open but definitely agree that "just don't read the posts" is usually posted and liked by the very people who openly or skate near breaking the rules and is often accompanied by a level of disdain for the rule itself. Given the number of political forums available, that's hard for me to understand. There are two other forums with opposite ideological leanings that as an Independent I visit from time to time. If there's a political topic I feel I want to discuss--which isn't often!-- I go to those.

yep, exactly the same thing happened with a forum I was not only a member but also one of 2 Mods

he was a younger guy a businessman and he thought that a forum for older people would be a great success, finacially as well as anything else. He funded it himself... but eventually he just couldn't put up with the nonsense that people cause... he worked full time, he didnt have the patience to come home and have to deal with the crap, and he shut it down.

Friendships made over several years gone.. gone forever...photos gone.. people very upset, didn't know what to do, where to go... in the few days leading up to the closure, I must have got a hundred PM's as a mod people giving me their private email addresses, so they wouldn't lose touch....it was heartbreaking ...

It's fine reporting a post, but that, it seems to me, is tittle-tattle. It's as though we're children, and some call for Daddy every time a disagreement happens. No-one here is so unreasonable that anyone should be wary of DMing, right?
The bragging about reporting, snitching, repulses me. Report if you must, but don't scold. Childish and disgusting.

Gotta admit this has been a concern of mine as well... at least it sounds as if you had warning with that forum. Imagine the horror of it just disappearing without warning. 🥺 Might be a good time to say that I don't mind giving out an email address... anyone who wants it, just PM and ask. (Well, if I know ya... not if you just joined like two seconds ago.) 😁

Maybe we should start a thread on the possibility of a small membership fee? If we can make it worth the forum owners time maybe it will insure the longevity of this site?

I'm new here, so not for me to initiate. But perhaps this is something many long term members will be willing to suggest?

yes .. it's a long time ago, but I think we had just a few days notice...

Iornically I still had those PM until last night, when I was having a clear out of some saved messages from that forum... and incredibly there was over 800... not all giving email adresses, but many, many worried about what was going to happen, where were they gonna go.... awful, so many people the forums are all they have as an aattachement to the otuside world... I didn't get rid of all of them, I kept back a hundred or so..

No, Matrix has been asked several times if he needs finacial help from us and he's firmly refused....

I think discussing politics here is like soiling our nest. For people who want to talk politics with others do you know if it is okay to make multi-party private messages here as it is on other forums?

Understandable really... I've noticed in life that as soon as someone "feels ownership" in something by helping to fund, they have the potential to want to take over and then get belligerent if their suggestions aren't considered.

..absolutely spot on ... that happened on another forum.... and when that shut down people were incensed because they'd donated money to it..... and as you say they felt they had a right to have more of a say in the way the forum was run, and would get really upset if they didn't get their way...

But PMs also have a report button.

True but I don't suppose anyone would report you if you simply sent an invite to participate in a private political discussion thread whether that was - for those in blue states, red states or all comers. I like this place as an escape from what vexes us so I wouldn't really want to myself. But it would be good to give those who want it an outlet.

If it works as it does elsewhere I think the person who starts it can decide to allow others to invite others too or not.

This forum is truly original, that's for sure. In the event that support was terminated, perhaps we could collaborate to continue or create something similar? I have no idea how the technical aspects work, but open to learning.
