My partner and I have been together for 30 years, before my sister-in-law was even married and have been there through the birth of each of her 4 children. Our 24 year-old nephew is the oldest and is stationed in Japan in the Navy. He called us to say he is passing through Dallas tomorrow and would like to see us. We will be taking him to dinner before his flight home. I just feel so honored that he reached out to us. My sister-in-law raised great kids!

Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful feedback and interest.

We had dinner with our nephew earlier today and asked him all kinds of questions about what it is like to be in the Navy, what he does everyday, what his future aspirations are and whether he has had the chance to experience Japan. His answers were fascinating.

Then, as any 24 year-old would, he started talking about how serious the Japanese are about arcades and video games and he shared his character on a particular one. We indulged him because we know it is a passion of his, but my eyes started to glaze over and we said our goodbyes.

He is a great young man. He and his sister are both into engineering, and he can't wait to see her in person to explain everything that he does. She has graduated from college and, at 22, is working for a technology company in Boston and has just gotten engaged.

We are so proud of them. I attribute this to my sister-in-law, who is an amazing mom.
