So many young people seem unable to do basic maths

I was always good at reading subjects, like history and social studies. As far as math went, I could add and subtract just fine, but multiplication and division were not so good. The best math class I ever took was a business math class, in college, that taught little tricks to help get through a problem quicker. After I graduated from high school (late sixties), they started letting students use calculators in school. And every so often, they came up with new math, and now, core math. https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/06/17/common-core-did-parents-get-left-behind/ via @mercnews

Parents can't help their children with math homework because they can't understand it any more than the kids can. And, schools don't want parents to understand it because they want kids to catch on in their own way.

The solution? Carry a calculator with you so you can lend it to someone who just doesn't understand any kind of math any more. Personally, 🤔 I think we need to go back to the old way, that served us well for centuries.;)

Don't blame the clerk. Blame the math classes.

A line is 10 feet from a positioned line. The line moves 5 feet, then 2 1/2 feet then 1 1/4 feet, continuing with half the previous distance. At one point the moving line moves millionths of an inch and so on. Will it ever overlap the positioned line exactly?

This is out of my league 😞

Oh this reminded me of slide-rules and abacuses, neither of which I ever learned to use, if we are hit by a solar flare I will just be sliding beads up and down strings with no idea what I'm doing. :-(
