You are probably onto something there. The bees knees is an idiom. There are several suggested origins, but it most likely arose in imitation of the numerous animal-related nonsense phrases popular in the 1920's, such as, the cat's pyjamas, cat's whiskers, gnat's elbow, monkey's eyebrows. There were others too but they are, at least, vulgar, at best, downright profane. Funny though, but I'm not going to be the one to print them.

To the uninitiated, a British & Australian phrase. Possibly New Zeeland and South Africa too. Sometimes extended to say, as neat & tidy as the canine frolics? Or words to that effect.
