Social Media V Online Forums

For me personally, quality is better than quantity. I much prefer the personal community feel of a place like Senior Forums over anything I've seen on facebook.

I never have joined fb, and I never intend to. I have however observed the media giant via a family member's account, all I see are nasty comments, many seem to be by trolls or bots, etc. I can see where people use it to connect with family, but other than that it appears very cold and heartless. Also, it appears to be riddled with disinformation.

I belong to several FB groups- mostly focused on local activities in our community. The MyFitnessPal app Facebook group is full of people worldwide, and is pleasant to share success stories and tips, but is sometimes dominated by weak, whiny people who ask the dumbest questions, or just post to lament about their weight loss failures.
There is a lot of positive groups on Facebook to choose from, just like anywhere on the WWW.

I have been in many groups on FB over the years and usually end up leaving them. One of the differences I see here is that we get to know each other, almost seems personally. We have actually become friends, we know what each other likes or dislikes, we care about each other. If someone doesn't show up in a number of days, we miss them. On those groups on FB, people attack you for your opinion or your post and you never know each other, not really.

So even if not that many people here answered your post, as you interact more here, your conversations become more meaningful. It also depends on what your question was. It may not have appealed to everyone. There are a lot of boards here that I do not ever go to and I imagine many others do also. You know what they say.......quality over quantity.
Well said, However and unfortunately...the comment: "On those groups on FB, people attack you for your opinion or your post" I have noticed that happening on SF as well and quite frequently recently. I agree that type of response is very unfortunate.
I think there is way more information posted on Facebook than I need to know, as a result I tend not to use it very often other than their marketplace. I visit it often.

Nathan, Thanks for the info....I was not aware of MyFitnessPal app Facebook group, such a interesting web site and one I will be using.

SF seems like a high-quality group of people. Who cares if you get six responses or 600? It's the quality of the discussion that matters. No one here has ever been the slightest bit unpleasant or mean-spirited, even when talking about things that we might not all agree upon.

I like facebook for keeping up with relatives and friends. Check it every few days. I also enjoy a few local groups for gardening, identifying local edible mushrooms etc.

As for in depth interaction, I can do a little bit of that at facebook with people I know well. But it's nicer at SF because we have a diverse group who are here because they want that type of in depth interaction.

Another issue I have with social media is censorship. My least utilized degree (except for a little sideline professional genealogy) is a MLIS. Censorship is anathmea in library and information science. Senior Forums has no politics rule and that's great ...it's a straightforward rule, not censorship. Facebook and other social media don't have straightforward criteria for removing content. One of the most dangerous is when they step into medical issues such as removing first hand reports of physicians (such as my internist) who successfully use hydroxychloroquine, zinc and azithromycin to treat Covid-19 in many of their patients. This was even after a major study showing hydroxycholorquine as dangerous for Covid-19 was pulled for falsified data. My theory is that in the billionaires of the world don't want a potential mega money making event such as Covid-19 to have a successful cure rate from a 40 year old cheap, generic drug and communicated this to social media owner billionaires.

Yet Outsports January award to Fallon Fox for "Bravest Athlete in History" was never censored on social media though Fox--a male born trans woman who fights as a woman in boxing--has broken the skulls of two women in boxing matches.

My question on FB is how can you have 120 friends?

120 doesn't even allow for extended family! I just looked at my first cousin's list who is two months apart in age from me. We grew up in the same small town, were in the same class K-12 at a larger nearby town, went to the same small university for undergraduate studies. We have 352 mutual friends and that's mostly from those years since we haven't crossed paths much since college other than at family gatherings.

I have not had that happen to me yet.

I am on FB and spend a lot of time there though since they changed to this new design my computer can't seem to handle it. So not on as much as usual. In recent months I have cut my friends list down to 437 because it was too many Like I said before I used to write 4 blogs and belonged to a big homesteading forum, so most of my friends are from those two groups. Plus my family, mostly cousins who I have become closer to because of FB. School friends. My home town friends. So I do not want to lose my connection to them.

I found SF back in January because I wanted to talk to people who did not know me due to homesteading, since I have changed my lifestyle. I feel comfortable here and like the interaction here.

FB has its moments I must say. I've had dustups due to a family member or friend who has a friend butting into our conversation. Actually, private messaging is best if it is a touchy subject, but then you cannot get more than one opinion. Unfortunately the FB folks are too busy deciding for themselves what is not their policy to permit, instead of demanding that everyone behave courteously and stay out of conversations not related to them. Alas, this is not the case.

We have created a Family Page that only immediate family members are invited/allowed/ to post and view..We discuss who is bringing what to family gatherings and where and when.

How do you set these up? Do you require several accounts?
You can create as many groups as you want with your fb acct.
Find the “groups” icon on fb. It looks like that lower icon I circled
Scroll through the tabs at the top and hit create. Fb guides you thru the rest.

I do run a couple of groups, Ronni, but never considered a friends only or family only group.
Yeah I run some too, one is a group of longtime friends spread all over the world....England, France, Holland, Australia etc, as well as a few in the US.

I’d like to have a group for immediate family but three of my kids either aren’t on fb, or never check it. So instead we always have several group emails going back and forth. The latest one is getting Thanksgiving set up...when, what time, where, who’s bringing what etc. There’ll be another one soon about Christmas.
