Anyone else heard about the changes coming up and what you must do in the next few days ?

After we both went in person one time to get things started I've been drawing, via direct deposit, SS since 2015 and the wife since 2017 and we've never had any problems whatsoever and I don't recall ever setting up an accounts with SS for either of us....I just figured that you automatically have an account if you're drawing benefits.

I had to go online to even file for SSA back in 2012. I only ever had to go in person once to sign the papers and proof of ID. I did direct deposit through my bank as I never heard of the government direct payment cards. I first started getting these account warnings around 2015. I went ahead and changed my account info last year and no problems.

Didn’t realize many people didn’t have an online account from date of sign up.

Twenty years ago when I signed up for SS, that was one of the first things they told me to do.
I took that instruction as part of getting into the program.

It’s a very useful website for all your information.

Thank you SO much, @IKE. Based on your prompting I dealt with this this morning. For those of us already drawing benefits, it sounds like the only situation where it could create a serious problem would be if someone wanted/needed to change banks. I don't foresee this for us at the moment, but better safe than sorry.

I had an existing on-line account with them that I last used in November 2023. I tried to log into it today and found that it was totally bollixed up. It took about an hour and a lot of frustration to get it converted over to one of the new login.gov accounts. Setting up a new one for my wife wasn't quite as bad although I can see where it might be tough for someone who isn't very computer savvy.

Thank you again!!!

OP Title is:
Social Security....What you MUST do by March 31st.

Title should be:
Social Security....What some MUST do by March 31st.

Just like the person in the video, I'll avoid trying to login via that incredibly app flawed SS website again unless forced to. After going through the tedious California DMV RealID process with a stack of documents, at our DMV office, set up my info to log into the SS site.

I spent way over 1 hour today trying to set up an account unsuccessfully. Once into the program, and already agreeing to forego paper statements (and get only emailed statements) once an account was established, it asked me to make a picture of my drivers license (front and back) and a picture of myself. I did, but something went wrong and I had to redo them, then it asked an abundance of other questions.

In the final question, it said they had to match my phone number to public records (or some such language). I have a Straight Talk phone. It said they found no record of that phone being associated with my name (even though they had sent me several texts to that phone during the sign up process) and said they could not open an account except by mailing me a code within 5 days, and I would have 10 days to enter it, or start over.

I closed the browser then went back and tried to login, and I was able to do so, but it didn't show any information, and I saw no option to enter the code they will supposedly send me by mail.

So it was all for nothing, and now I may not even get paper statements anymore. If that happens, I'm worse off than if I had never done anything.

Now I am waiting on the phone, and it says my estimated hold time is 60 minutes.

Update: The wait lasted 2 hours and nothing was resolved. [edited]

Yes, and the accounts we sign up for today (if I can get mine to ever work) may face the same fate by November, 2027.

I don't remember having to provide a driver's license when I set up my account online, but that was years ago. Sounds like a frustrating experience Mack.

Please keep us posted!

I went in today and tried to make the transition without any success.

Received an email saying no account associated with this email.

I double checked to make sure I was not on some sort of fake SS site.

I’ll give it a few days and try it again.

Sounds frustrating Aunt Bea. Did you ever create a login.gov account? That's something SS initiated a while back. But I notice they still give the option of using one's ssa.gov login credentials if an account was created before Sept 18, 2021.

@MACKTEXAS I meant to add that it is important that we be very careful. Spammers have become so good at reproducing the look of websites so that they look very legitimate. I also just read an article that detailed how they can also spoof caller IDs so a call appears to be coming from a legitimate source.

For me...that's way too much info to be sending over the internet. I wouldn't do it or send any codes, etc.
If need be, I'm close enough to go directly to their office. Sorry you had to deal w/that.

I’ve had an account for several years and was trying to transition to the new system without success.

Since I have not heard from the Social Security Administration itself, I will not get involved in this program.
I saw the notice about this on social security's website when this thread was first started. Now it's gone. I also saw it reported on Good Morning American by their financial correspondent. She left out an important point though. Those of us who will not need to change our direct deposit information or need to verify income due to an upcoming move (or things of that nature), don't have to worry about the change.

I could easily offer to those considering in 25 to resist the urge and go on to higher resources instead.
Sooner or later all the whimpsy pinheaded stuff will wear out.

Glad I checked back here today. …. Thanks for all the useful information.

.…so old accounts need to be transferred to a new setup…... Grrrrrrrrrr

Like Diva said above, if you don’t need to change anything on your old account, just stay away while they are messing with it.
