Social Security....What you MUST do by March 31st.

Understaffing is predicted to get much worse, perhaps to the point our benefits might be delayed (if any glitches happen after critical staff is gone). Aren't you supposed to pay what you owe by April 15th even though you filed for an extension?
They have a $1,000 limit for owed taxes. Yes you maybe get charged a fee.

My BIL before he became a tax preparer would just send his w-2 to the IRS in an envelope with a note stating, 'I can't even come close' and let them do it.

  • I am frustrated with OPM right now. Starting this year, they are no longer mailing the 1099R forms out. You must download them from the site.
  • In order to do that you need your claim no. which is listed on last year's 1099R and you need a passcode.
  • Supposedly they sent a link with the passcode to your email associated with them. I never got it.
  • You call OPM and it is an automated call telling you to contact your HR dept. I am the ex-spouse of a totally clueless Retiree who never went the extra mile in his life and doesn't have internet knowledge.
  • So i put in a request for someone to send ME a passcode for MY taxes. i must now wait 3-5 days.
  • I doubt it will happen
  • Once you have the passcode, you can download the 1099R form from the OPM site.
  • This is going to be a $hit show.

My online login was all messed up so I finally got to where I could take the steps to verify it was me
(photo of Dr. License and a selfie OR go to a post office on the list near me, show the post office my license AND
the bar code they send to my phone.
The Post Office method worked beautifully, got a text right away SS received verification and I could now go into my
account and print out the 1099R form

As some have shared, I've been using Login.gov for some time now, ever since the SSA sent me an email asking me to sign up. I don't remember exactly how long ago it was but I estimate close to a year maybe. I did not have to upload scans of my license or a selfie. The last time I signed in through Login.gov was 1/27, when I changed my address. As usual, I went into my SS account from there. I'm glad I saw this post in case I have a problem later.

I went online to download my 1099R last month and received a message saying they would be mailed out by Jan. 31. I still haven't received mine, so I will go back to the site again and see if it can be downloaded. I suppose mail could be delayed due to all the snow storms but all the junk still makes it.
