.....what would you do if the cabin crew said you had to sit next to it for the whole of the flight.?

This happened to a couple from Australia..

They were forced to sit beside a dead woman for hours after she passed away on their long-haul flight.

Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin were on a Qatar Airways flight from Melbourne to Venice when the woman suddenly collapsed in the aisle after going to the toilet.

She was unable to be revived despite the cabin crew's efforts.
Unfortunately, the lady couldn't be saved, which was pretty heartbreaking to watch,' Mr Ring told A Current Affair.

'They went to try and move her, they brought this chair down... and they put her in the chair and tried to wheel her up towards business class.

'But she was quite a large lady, and they couldn't get her through the aisle.'

Crew members noticed there were vacant seats on both sides of the couple and asked them to move over to make room for the body.

The dead woman was put beside Mr Ring, and covered in blankets for the remaining four hours of the flight to Doha.

To make matters worse, the couple was forced to wait even after the plane had touched down in Doha as police and medical officers boarded.

Mr Ring said the crews began taking the blankets off the body and inspecting it while he and his wife were sitting there, meaning he saw the woman's face.

'I can't believe they told us to stay... it wasn't nice,' he said.

needless to say the couple are traumatised...and no-one from Quantas have contacted them to apologise..
The fact is there was space in Business class.. if anyone had brains in their heads they would have moved the couple there instead of moving the dead body into the seat next to the.. appalling IMO
Aussie couple forced to sit next to dead woman on long-haul flight

It seems that the respectful thing to do is let the cadaver lie
out flat on a stretcher, strapped down and safely put in case
of rough air. The Fact the Airline has not such a space is mostly
unthoughtful. Judgement in favor of the plaintiffs family.

As I am a Passenger I demand different seats away from the dead Cadaver.
Who the hell do these stewardess think they are. I get up and go back, take
their seats, they sit next to the dead and do their jobs. I am not a trained
mortician, medical Examiner / inspector, Coroner. It would appear that
Three passengers were put thru the worst afternoon of their lives no care
for their hurt. Tripple damages awarded here. International long haul
Air Craft have several jump seats up front and a place for the stewardesses
and pilots to rest too. They are not model T travel junk. Many of the long haul
international flights carry another flight crew. They have open space designed
usually an upper floor cabin area. This is close to 10,000 mile flight. near 20 hours.
Figure taxi time, disembarking etc. a total life worst day for a group.
My best friend, neighbor is a retired international pilot. He said, "oh my ___!"
Most likely some of the aircrew no longer have jobs here.

I am presuming the couple would have been moved if it were possible.

Not sure what else crew could do in the circumstances of a full flight though.

This happened in my family. My father took a flight from DC to Texas and mid flight he died of a terrible heart attack. He had a window seat and the person next to him thought he was sleeping. After landing they tried to wake him but realized he was gone. They covered him with a blanket while the passengers deplaned.
I'm sorry your dad died like that,:( but at least they didn't discover it until after they landed....

If I got to use the arm rest all by myself, I wouldn't mind. But really, what could you do with the body of a very large person on a plane? I've had to move some large deceased people, and it isn't easy. I can't see anybody trying to drag a huge body down the aisle, without making it a gross production for all on board. The dead flop all over the place. No matter where they put the body somebody was going to be next to it. Keeping it, where it is, localizes the passengers to just a few affected by the death. You don't need to advertise it to everyone on the plane. Granted if you're in the seat next to the body, it will be a very long flight.

No but they could have moved the couple into Business class where there was spare seats....

Moving her to business class seems to me seats were available, I'd check that. I'd check to see if 1st. class seating was available. Or if split seating was available. It would cost the airline nothing to seat people away from the dead woman.

At first I thought the same thing. But considering how closely packed seating is, once you start to move people from around the body, others may decide Business class is a lot better than sitting with a dead body, and why can't I be moved, too? It's a consideration??

No I don't think so. I mean they had already taken the body away into Business class, then brought it back because she was too large..well in that time they could have seated the couple in business class and left the body on it's onw in the seats.

The point of this si this couple are absolutely dsitaught that they were put in this position..and further.. they weren't even allowed off the plane like everyone else when it landed, they had to sit there while Medical staff boarded the plane...and examined the body

That's just unacceptable...

The flight attendants should have left the deceased woman's body on the floor in the aisle where she collapsed and covered her with blankets until the plane landed, since the flight was supposed full and she was too obese to move. NOT traumatized 2 of the passengers because of their unfortunate seat locations. ALL of the passengers could have remained seated in that area until her body was removed by the medical team, again not force 2 passengers to remain seated until her body was removed while others were free to leave immediately.

Not everyone has the mental fortitude to sit next to a dead body for 4 hours on a plane. Nor should they be forced to do so. Flying is uncomfortable as it is these days with cramped seating, obnoxious passengers and flight attendants, etc etc.

On a side note, I haven't flown in over 30 years. I have always hated it.:D

At United, we had a protocol for dealing with this type of situation. I never had to deal with a dead passenger, but we did have a few heart attacks and one emergency appendicitis case. In those cases, we were directed to the nearest airport that would have an ambulance and medical team standing by for our arrival.

I don't think it would bother me too much to be seated by someone's dead body, but it would be emotionally upsetting to have just seen them die. Not being allowed to deplane right away with everyone else would be miserable, I have to exercise a bunch of self discipline to patiently wait for people in seats ahead of me to move along.
