Someone hacked my debit account and my bank caught the fraud

$162 was used to place a bet on a sports betting website!! I got a call a couple of days ago from the fraud department. I told them it was a fraud. They sopped all activity on my card, and I had to get a new debit card. Tomorrow I have to call the bank when the hold on that account is released and "dispute the charges" on that card. I hope it is finished at that point, or the bank has to investigate. This happen to anyone else? How does it happen? Now I am leery of buying stuff online. :(

My son just had someone apply for unemployment benefits under his name. No money stolen but a hassle to change all his online passwords and file a fraud report, plus get a new debit card which he suspects is how someone got his info.

Protecting my identity is one of the reasons I NEVER use a debit card for anything but pulling money out of the ATM, and I do that only at a branch of my bank. It just seems like a debit card is a direct pipeline to your banking accounts and personal info. I use a credit card for most transactions, and that credit card company has no affiliation with my bank.

The more doors I can put between a theif and my money the better I like it.

It's never happened to me 'touch wood'' from buying anything online.. however I do ensure the website I'm buying from ha the ''padlock' symbol .... and usually.. especially when using unproven site like the newer Chinese owned ones, I make a transaction, and then remove my card details immediately..

We had someone defraud us many years ago... but at the local Petrol garage ( Esso) which was Franchised ... it was in the days before tap/ pin cards or inserting.. when the assistant would take the card from the customer and put it in their machine.

In the garage they took my husband's card, and under the counter they had an identical machine so they were scanning everyone's cards into this fraudulent credit card machine.. out of sight of the customer.

My o/h didn't realise he'd been defrauded until he got a call from the Fraud department of the Police... , fortunately they were caught, but not before they'd stolen many thousands from other people..

Today paying with just a tap of your card... and never allowing anyone else to touch your card or to know your pin number .. is extremely important

This happened to me twice, but both times the fraud was committed off-line. What likely happened in my case: when I pay bills I write a paper check and mail it to the service provider. When received by the provider, a human opens the envelope and takes out the check. The human makes a copy of the check to collect my bank account number. The human then makes a "phone authorized payment" to their credit card account(or wherever), giving my checking account number to be used to make payment. šŸ˜‘

I don't see the value of a debit card if you have a credit card. I must be missing something.
For me the benefits of a DC is not having to carry cash or worry about having cash on me.
Works for door door solicitations and friends and neighbors ... "I don't carry cash"
No loose change to pile up from purchases either ... not to mention the germs paper and coins may carry.

Another benefit is I ONLY use the CC for online purchases and while there has been fraud as I mentioned, the annoyance of being without a credit card for a couple of days while my bank FedEx's a new card to me is no where near the annoyance of being without a debit card and checking account frozen, resulting in a change to the checking account number and having to go to the trouble of updating direct deposit numbers and other stuff if there is DC fraud. I only use the debit card for in person purchases and fraud is less likely.

So the debit card is like a backup option on hand in case of credit card fraud.

I have had my debit card hacked four times in the last 20 years. Never lost any money, fortunately. It is a hassle to change any auto-pays of course.
A few months ago my checking/routing number got hacked! That was a pain as they made me close out the account and open a new one. I only used checks for one person, who does some occasional work for me. He has since disappeared! Smoking gun? Perhaps. No more checks.

I’ve been scammed online before but called my bank up and they fixed everything. It was Fraudulent and my money was returned.
I now only purchase from one site since they’ve earned my trust and they have everything I need. In ten plus years I have never had a problem with them.

Note: if someone steals from your account, it IS the banks responsibility.

Sorry! You have to be very careful with debit cards. I know you know that in hindsite. Too much flim flamming going on these days.

Oh dear. I hope you do get it resolved quickly. That's unsettling but it shouldn't cause any long term issues.

I don't have a debit card. Just credit. I did have to pay approximately an extra $2.50 at AAA this morning to pay for my yearly car tags because I didn't want to drain my cash, I don't have debit and they don't take checks.

Banks are on this stuff pretty quickly. They seem to know when something is legit. Or not. I've used my credit card to purchase in another country without problems. Yet once I got my credit card shut down and re-issued by my bank because of some fraud they picked up on my Paypal account. I've never had trouble since I didn't know exactly what it was. But I appreciated their diligence.

After that I got another major credit card just in case that ever happened again so I could always have one for emergencies. I rarely use the second one. Just once a year or so to keep it relevant.

My DD always uses a credit card ..for everything. She feels that with the CC she's getting full protection on every purchase..
I use my credit card so rarely, the woman at AAA had to tell me how to use it. I didn't know if I was supposed to swipe, but it has the chip so I had to slide the card in.

Same here; credit cards have more safety than debit cards.

When that happened to me my bank didn't need to investigate because it was 1 of several fraudulent charges to customers, they in fact knew before i did. My only hassle was waiting for new card.

I have learned a lot of pretty obvious stuff, that I should of thought of, from reading this thread. In a way it is like opening the door to your checking account. ( Using a Debit Card "unwisely". ). This in many ways scares me about how many "wars" are being fought in cyberspace. It is unfathomable. So, I better take care of my modest nest egg, else I lose it by being stupid. :)

Speaking of PayPal, I've had an account for 20 years. In all that time, I've never had a credit card or bank account attached to it (listed in the PP interface). It's not necessary.

Added: when I've purchased from a merchant who only took PayPal payments, I went through the checkout procedure and used whatever credit card I wished to at the time. And still, that CC is not listed in my PayPal account.

I've heard you can do this. I have a checking account registered with PayPal. However, it's a second account. Luckily my bank has free checking and you can have multiple checking accounts. I only have the two. So I keep a smaller money amount in that account for online shopping. Not what I keep in regular checking. My regular checking account is NOT attached to my PP account.

I have my credit card registered with Amazon, Chewy and then cable and my consumer cellular account.

Your bank will issue you a new card, freeze the account immediately, and use the tap to pay method from now on. My bank reimbursed me some of the amount. Good luck and I am sooo very sorry this happened to you. It will take awhle to find out what stores do the tap to pay. I just took off an afternoon to just go in and ask before I bought there.
