My husband was involved in a Car crash this morning on his way to work.!!

he'd driven off the motorway onto the uphill slip road (exit road) which is on a bend, and was stopped behind waiting traffic at the junction, when he was rear ended hard by a young woman in a smaller car

Fortunately my husband is ok, as is the woman..but my husband drives a high end very expensive sports car , and the damage to the rear of his car is considerable!...her Insurance company are going to have to pay out a LOT of money and her premiums will go sky high next year!!

My husband isn't an angry man so when he got out of the car to survey the damage , he simply said ''Good morning, thank you very much for that'' ..and she started screaming it wasn't her fault, which of course it was because my o/h was stationary .. however once she'd calmed down they exchanged insurance details, and he's just spent 2 hours on the phone to insurance companies etc...and a new courtesy car will arrive here today for him, and I'll have to go and fetch him from work 40 mile round trip..later!!

Sorry to hear that, Holly. It's a blessing that nobody was injured. Still, insurance notwithstanding, it a rough way to start one's day. YOU drive carefully when going to collect him later.

Btw, I was just going to ask what a "slip road" is - thanks for clarifying that. ;)

Thank you Tommy... I'm always concerned on slip roads, people just come driving fast up or down them , forgetting that people may be waiting at the junction to get on to the next road..

Hi,Holly glad to know your hubby wasn't injured, sorry his car was damaged.
I wonder if the young woman who rear ended him was distracted by talking on her mobile phone
I see this all the time when I'm out on my walks, can't tell you how many times I've almost been hit by distracted drivers Sue

Good to hear no one was hurt. That should always be the first concern.

Accidents are handled differently here in Pennsylvania. We have no fault insurance meaning that each insurance company for the parties involved will pay for damages to the vehicles. Medical is also paid in the same manner. Whichever car is considered to be at fault, then that person’s insurance company will compensate to the companies for damages to the other cars involved.

It it sounds confusing, but works well.

Movie Queen, yes I wondered that too. Although it's against the law here to use a mobile phone while driving, even when stopped but with the engine running, it doesn't stop people, and many accidents are caused because of it

911... fortunately medical doesn't need to be paid here in that our NHS is free to use... but it's always the at fault insurance company who has to pay for the other cars involved . However it's a problem if someone isn't insured, then that causes a lot of hassle, and the person who is the victim ends up being out of pocket by having to claim on their own insurance ..then of course there are those who won't admit liability

About 5 years ago...my car was parked in a restaurant car park in broad daylight.
When I came out it had been hit hard, and severe damage to the offside... in a hit and run

fortunately I was parked under a CCTV camera, so I asked the manager of the restaurant if they would look to see if they could see who had caused it.

it took about an hour and by great luck the person who'd driven into my car was still,in the restaurant, he'd smashed into my car then pulled out of the space, and driven to the other side of the car park, and casually gone into the restaurant as though nothing had occurred .

I confronted him and explained that he may not have realised but there was evidence of him driving into my car , and he told me where to go in no uncertain terms. I called the police, they looked at the evidence, and went after him...he went to ground, ( this was a middle aged man)... long story short it took weeks for the police to eventually apprehend him, and they did it as he was driving down the motorway one day, and arrested him.

Eventually it had to go to court because his insurance company were refusing to pay out... and after the judges look at the evidence, and heard his obviously to a deaf man lying testimony... they awarded the case to me... but here's the Rub... I nearly feel backwards when in court it as announced what his occupation was....

An Auto Insurance assessor !!!!!

Glad your husband was not hurt. Will they be able to fix his car or will he have to replace it?

he's not sure tbh Pappy. he's excellent at car repairs himself so he knows what's serious damage and what's not , but he's got a suspicion it may have to be written off....

I'm really glad your hubs wasn't hurt hollydolly! Does he have an opinion about the car...whether he'd prefer it was repaired or replaced?

Ron's daughter was involved in an accident not too long ago, nothing serious, she actually hit a deer that darted across the road. She expected (and hoped) that the vehicle would be written off because she was certain it had sustained frame damage. Instead they repaired it, and she's had nothing but trouble with it ever since. It's been back to the mechanic twice and it's still not right!

Thanks Ronni... well I'm sure he would prefer it to be repaired if possible, he was just about to part exchange for another high end car, he'd only just been in talks with the car showroom 2 days ago... ( typical isn't it?, especially as he's never been in an accident ever)..... .. but he's aware of what damage could be serious enough for it to be written off or not... so I doubt he would allow them to repair it if he felt the damage was too serious

Sorry to hear this Holly, but glad hubs is ok!

The same thing happened to me on Friday while I was stopped at a red light. My appointment with the other insurance repair shop is tomorrow and they give me a free rental car. Unlike PA where 911 lives, CT is not a no-fault state. Since my car is 11 years old I too, fear it will be a total loss. It is driveable tho'.

Hubs must be sick over his car.

Oh goodness RR... were you hurt?.... I hope not!! Oh and at 11 years old you'll probably only get the Blue book price for it too if it's written off .. oh that's horrible for you.

Fortunately O/H is not someone who is very calm about most things, but this couldn't have come at a worse time for him when he was just about to part ex it...

Holly, I only have a sore neck but it's getting better; thanks for asking.

BTW, I was astonished by your experience with the hit and run in the parking lot and he being an insurance assessor!! Outrageous that, and he had the gall to come inside the restaurant!

I didn't quite understand when you said about hubs : "couldn't have come at a worse time for him when he was just about to part ex it..."

Radish Rose, anytime anyone rear-ends you it's their fault
so if your car is a total loss then the other driver's insurance
should replace yours with a new one. Right
? Are you okay??

Edit:
Oh, we posted at the same time...glad you're okay

Oh sorry RR, he'd just called day before yesterday about a new Massarati, which he is due to go and see at the showroom on his next day off and he was going to use his own car in part exchange.... :(

Oh Thanks, Lara. But no, they don't owe me a new car. They owe me what I had; not better, not worse. It's ACV or, Actual Cash Value. But, it would mean another used car with someone else's problems. We'll see....maybe my low mileage will help.

Well , I've just signed for the delivery of o/h's courtesy car...how quick was that?..I'm amazed because the accident happened around 6.30am, and the car was here at 2.30pm..and brought all the way from 2 counties away..incredible!!! about 60 miles ..Excellent Insurance company, they obviously don't hang around!

Heh, my brother was sitting behind a guy at a stop light

Evidently the guy had mistakenly put it in reverse, as when the light changed, he punched it

Ramming the rear end of his car into the front end of my brother’s

Glad everyone is ok. I hope they do a good job on your car. We had an accident a couple of years ago and after the car was repaired it never was the same. Something about not being able to align it properly because of the damage. Now our tires wear like crazy. We had it to several dealerships and they all said the same thing. I hope you will be happy when you get yours back.

jeez that's a difficult one to prove who was at fault...I hope he had a dash cam

Again, here in PA, insurance carriers normally add “Uninsured Motorists” coverage to most all polices. The cost is very nominal, but in cases where the other driver does not have insurance, the injured insured party is covered.

BTW, it is also illegal to operate a motor vehicle in this state w/o insurance, but that does not stop some people from driving anyway. When a driver is stopped for any reason here in PA, they are required to show license, registration and proof of insurance. If any of those items are not shown, the driver may be fined on the spot, or the Trooper or police officer may require them to show up at their Barracks or police station in a minimum amount of time, usually 24-48 hours, with the required missing proof.

I never counted the number of times that I had made routine traffic stops and the driver could not show one, two or all three of the required documents, but it was plenty. In some cases, I even had their vehicle confiscated, until they could show their documents. Sounds harsh, but sometimes it’s necessary to do so.
