Someone's going to be sorry they left home this morning

I remember, back in the 70's, 80's and 90's, vehicle insurance was not mandatory in California. If a person was stopped, all that was asked for was DL and Registration. Not only do some folks not have vehicle insurance, they also don't have boat insurance. We have both, plus current registration for both.

Again, here in PA, insurance carriers normally add “Uninsured Motorists” coverage to most all polices. The cost is very nominal, but in cases where the other driver does not have insurance, the injured insured party is covered.

BTW, it is also illegal to operate a motor vehicle in this state w/o insurance, but that does not stop some people from driving anyway. When a driver is stopped for any reason here in PA, they are required to show license, registration and proof of insurance. If any of those items are not shown, the driver may be fined on the spot, or the Trooper or police officer may require them to show up at their Barracks or police station in a minimum amount of time, usually 24-48 hours, with the required missing proof.

I never counted the number of times that I had made routine traffic stops and the driver could not show one, two or all three of the required documents, but it was plenty. In some cases, I even had their vehicle confiscated, until they could show their documents. Sounds harsh, but sometimes it’s necessary to do so.

yes it's illegal to drive here without insurance too... but like there it doesn't stop people. Unfortunately we don't have the ''uninsured driver policy''' available here...

Unlike the USA..we in the Uk are actively discouraged from carrying our vehicle documents with us in the car... if we're stopped by the Police we're given a ticket, to show our documents at our nearest Police station within 7 days!!

Conversely in Spain on the continent where I have a second home and where my daughter lives...it's against the law to not carry your car papers and licence in the car wherever you go !

My brother had some sorta cover everything under the sun coverage
His Corvette was not yet a year old

We have a choice of 3rd party only or 3rd party, fire and theft ..or fully comprehensive!! Both my husband and I have the latter although it's significantly more expensive than the former 2...but it pays for itself in the even that we are the cause of an accident, rather than someone else!!

So relieved to hear your husband was not injured, Holly .. and you too, RR.

A few years back, we had a similar thing happen to us on the highway. The traffic ahead had come to a dead stop. We managed to stop just
inches from the last car .. people behind us somehow managed the same.
As we were sitting there, the car behind us were rammed so hard that
they had to be taken to hospital with whiplash. The car that rammed into
them, skidded along the sides of both our cars on the passenger side. The
occupants were three young women who looked very dazed. It was a real
surprise to see the damage done to our car. It took months for it to be
repaired .. we really thought they would write it off.

I would like to see our highway speeds reduced, but I don't think that
will happen anytime soon. Imagine crashing while driving 100km. Of
course, the posted speed is 80km.

The downside, is that no matter who was at fault, everybody's insurance
goes up.

I'm so sorry Holly, but I'm glad no one was seriously hurt. Cars can be replaced, a lost life can't. Please keep calm and just get through this. I know the last thing you need is more stress right now. Hugs from - Chic.

That's so true Pinky, everyone's insurance is affected, even the victim has their following years' premiums increased, very unfair.

BTW..the speed limit here is 70MPH on the motorways, 112 kph... and they're campaigning for faster speed limits!!

So very sorry to read about your Hubby's accident. I hope everything turns out all right as far as his vehicle is concerned and so glad he wasn't hurt. That is all you need with your medical issues.HUGS

An auto accident is a good example of how people's first impulse is to try to clear themselves of any wrongdoing. Often their first words are "It wasn't MY fault!" or "I didn't do it on purpose" or "You ran into ME!" instead of "Is anyone hurt?"

See if anyone is hurt.
Exchange information.
Call poiice.
Otherwise, keep your mouth shut.

Thank you all... he's home now, but he's actually feeling soreness in his neck already, and he's definitely not a person who would say he was hurt if he wasn't.

However he's got to go to work again at 5am, and he works until late so he's not going to have time to see a Doctor!!

I took delivery on a brand new car one evening, and the next morning was rear ended at a toll booth the very next morning. I got out expecting a disaster and there was only a little scratch about 1" long. I still was not happy that my new toy had been hit. It was my first brand new car, an Austin Healey Sprite.

So glad to hear that your husband wasn't hurt, Holly!

It's always such a hullabaloo when you get into a he did/she did/I didn't/yes, you did situation. That's why dashboard cameras really come in handy.

The last accident I was in about 11 years ago got charged to me by the officer (I knew I was doomed when he and the other driver were laughing and talking about "women drivers") and I realized by the other driver's actions later that the whole thing was done deliberately. It was a very minor accident, very minor, but a couple of weeks later I'm told by my insurance company that he'd retained a lawyer and was claiming severe back injuries. I was worried but when investigation showed that he had claimed "severe back injuries" seven times in the past ten years from minor accidents, his lawyer dropped him and he wasn't heard from again.

It's enough to make you want to stop driving.

OMG, Holly, that's terrible! Although, let me join the others in saying thank God he was not hurt. Cars can be replaced; husbands can't.

I just read an article about the increase in traffic accidents since marijuana became legal in some states. I don't know if it's legal in England. But from your description of the way the woman was behaving, she certainly doesn't sound like someone on a mellowing drug, just the opposite. Of course, alcohol could have been involved. Did they test her for any kind of substance abuse?

Sunny, thank you for your concern , no Marijuana is not legal here , but it's widely used, and I'm always saying to hubs to be careful because he leaves for work early in the morning and comes home late at night, so I get anxious about people who are mis-using drugs and or alcohol, I see it all the time in front of me, cars wavering over the road, and or going obsessively slow.. or generally acting strangely. people also using mobile phones which are illegal too while driving ...

No test. The police weren't called, because she exchanged details with hubs, and no-one had obvious injuries so the police wouldn't attend anyway unless it was clear someone was either hurt, drugged and or drunk This was before 7am this morning so she may have have had something the previous night which was still in her system..or maybe she was just a Nut. However, fortunately he has the footage from his dash cam to prove that she drove straight into the back of his stationary car . His Insurance company believed him instantly...

Hollydolly, I am sorry to read this report, I am pleased that your
husband is OK or as OK as can be under the circumstances.

I was away and didn't read this earlier,

2017 or 2016 I had an accident, the car in front of me stopped
suddenly and the brake lights weren't working, so I run into it.

The insurance wrote my car off as it was uneconomical to repair,
I kept the car and had it repaired, it cost a lot less than the £3K
that the repair shop quoted.

My car has only done 36,000 miles, unfortunately the insurance
companies don't go on mileage, they go on age.

Still I have a lovely comfortable car that I enjoy on long journeys.

Mike.

That's true about the age thing as well Mike... even if it's a little scratch they'll write it off if they deem the cost of repair to be more than the Blue book price...

Many people buy Cat C & D cars , from showrooms and Auctions and repair them and they're fine, but also there's just as many as those who've mentioned here on this thread who've had their car repaired after an accident and it was never the same.

I know what you mean Jujube...it does make you wonder sometimes if there's any honest people out there. There's a whole ''industry'' here in the UK which the police are currently trying to stamp down on and with the advent of Dash Cam cameras is helping, whereby the car in front will deliberately stop so suddenly to cause an accident with the car behind..an of course claiming all sorts of injuries to boot...

I just read this Holly. I'm so glad hubs wasn't seriously hurt. I hope he does see a doctor soon though. Does he feel heartsick over the damage to his car? John would.

Yes he does Linda, as you know he's put a lot of toil and money into making that car beautiful.. and the fact he was just about to part exchange it for a new one as well .

he's feeling the pain now from the accident in his back and neck, but despite my and the family's entreaties to see a doctor unfortunately, he can't take time off work to go see one.

I'm not sure if he could go to A&E and get it looked at because it's not strictly an Emergency, but our doctors' surgery isn't open before or after he's finished work
