Sonar rodent repellant. Do they work?

I have had an unwelcome mouse problem for years. Have usually used traps. In the last 3 days I have evicted 3 of the critters.
I am wondering about those sonar rodent repellant things. Are they as good as they claim? I am considering them as an option. Of course, I still have one of my pet rats left, and would have to wait until he has passed on. I do not plan on having more rats. They were more my husband's thing.
I have read up on them and how they work. Supposedly safe for other pets. They say safe around dogs, but what if I got a cat? Still safe? If I get a cat.
 

I've only used those ones for moles/voles outside in the yard, didn't work at all, seemed to attract them instead. I tried two or three different brands and they all ended up in the trash. I have a cat and dog, didn't seem to bother either of them. Now they are on vole watch. :D
 
Are you referring to the plug-ins for the house Marie?
I have 1 in every room except the bedroom cuz the little flashing light bugged me in the night. They were about $20 a piece but, well worth it. At an apt I was in I saw the mouse twice and that was it. It got rid of all the roaches and the bed bugs in MY apt. I kept them and use them here at the new place and I had ants when I first moved in. Haven't seen them at all the past 2 yrs. Rarely see a spider. Have had no other rodent issues. The thing is...you have to leave them plugged in. It takes about a month for them to really start working. After that...the longer they're in the less bugs and stuff you will notice. It says one is good for every so many ft but I got one for every room. While you're waiting for that to kick in...I would get a couple mouse traps. But, I doubt you'll need them. Once mine discovered the plug-in he never came back.

Never heard of a vole till now.
 
How many rooms do you have in your house?

How big of a rodent problem are we talking?

I would try to space them out evenly if you don't put one in every room. Just don't get impatient with them. It takes a little bit for them to start working. They work really well. I had a bunch of crickets in the basement when I moved in. This thing has cut down on that, too. Good luck Marie!
 
When we moved to the countryside, we scattered 4 Riddex pest repellent units throughout the house. It's been several years, and we have had minimal problems with insects, etc., in the house, and only 1 mouse has made it to the main living quarters. Every Fall/Winter, I set some mouse traps in the garage/basement, and usually mash a half dozen mice that sneak in if I have the garage doors open. On balance, I think these plug in repellent units seem to work quite well....and I just checked...they still make them.

I have 6 main rooms and two baths. I have caught 3 since putting a trap in living room on Monday. I have seen evidence in closets and cupboards. Now that I think of it, I may just put out two at first. In living room and in back of house. I think I see how they get in. Going to fill in.
 
They might say it's "safe around dogs or cats," but that doesn't mean it won't constantly annoy them. They can hear sounds that we can't.
When I had a dog, I had a couple of rats that I got rid of with traps. I put the traps where it would be impossible for my dog to get near them. One trap worked on top of the refrigerator. I used double-stick tape to make sure it didn't move - both for my dog's safety from the trap and I didn't want the trap to end up on the floor where my dog would probably eat the rat.

I put the second trap behind a sofa. My dog couldn't get near that trap because I pushed the heavy sofa against the wall. And, I kept my dog in my closed bedroom just in case he could move the sofa. That trap worked overnight.
 
I use them with 2 cats,they seem to work=no critters.
2 cats live here,they don't seem bothered.
The rat would be a problem though,can you put it in a garage or something?

They are a gimmick. How it keeps selling....well, the famous Barnum&Bailey quote comes to mind.
I live near a clearing in the woods. If I do not keep the cheapest, stickiest dryer sheets lining the hood of my car near the air vents, the field mice will soon be nesting near my heater/AC fan and then a snake will crawl in after it and become stuck. It costs almost $100 to get the nearest dealership to clean it all out!
Also, I keep the stinkiest electric air fresheners in 2 sockets in my basement to deter them there, too. Spring and Fall are when they are looking for nesting areas the most here. I still get them in the basement in traps now and then tho. (If you do not like to empty the traps, set them and leave them inside a brown paper lunch bag. Throw the bag out with the trap if the trap is sprung with a mouse. Traps are cheap.

They can squeeze themselves in the tiniest holes!
