Spain has passed and has now enacted several new laws making it very close to a police state and limiting free speech.

Included is a prohibition of photographing police without their permission, showing "disrespect" to authorities with no clear definition of disrespect, limited or banned protesting on or near government property and clauses like automatic deportations. Advocates say it's to control protests others say it could basically stop or limit legitimate protest. Could also limit reporting since it's known as or has 'gag' rules.

I thought Generalissimo Francisco Franco was still dead.

Like the Greeks and Italians, Spanish democracy is usually modified by the iron fist in the velvet glove.

That is why so many of them have escaped to your side of the water in the last few hundred years!

Conquistador keeps popping up in mind when I think Spain. Yes there is a reason many left although I don't know if I would term it "escape"...eh. Ironic the remnants or ancestors of Spain's era of exploration & conquest is at the center of attention in the US today.

Many stories call Spain an important ally and democracy to keep. If they keep this crap up I don't want them as an ally. Spain seemed insignificant during World War II even though an Axis ally so I don't see why NATO would get upset. The UN might.

The above mentioned countries had their 15 minutes centuries ago and they need to accept it. The same happens to most countries and cultures overtime-a fade away into irrelevance or obscurity. But unfortunatly so does the average citizen's existence.

The U.S. is hardly a beacon of purity ...

Anti-Protest Law

Absolutely. Parade and other permits pop in mind immediately along with injunctions that block sit in or blocking type protest although they are actually disrupting others.

They tried to fluff the bill/law by calling it the Tresspass bill then say it's only for areas guarded by the secret service. As pointed out this was passed before a scheduled G-8 Summit in Chicago. Too many politicians got their feelings hurt during the Occupy protests. The secret service must love this law for the fence jumpers and plane landers.

Spain takes it further though with any government building and vague wording. For all the claims of free speech and democracy those in power in any country hate dissent, they want followers & sheep along with the image they are in control and all their subjects are happy-see nobody else is complaining so why are you. Those elsewhere including the US are watching this play out not for curiosity but tips.

Guimar Police , Tenerife Spain called SLACKERS

The commenter made comments about the Guimar Police which is apparently a town on the Island of Tenerife(Where I will not be going or recommending). He said the police should have hammocks and swimming pools at their police stations-LOL, opposed new building and basically called the police lazy in fun. The "ministry of truth" didn't like that. Cited for 'disrespect' for calling the Guimar Police, Tenerife Spain SLACKERS??????

So no one is allowed to call of the police of Guimar, Tenerife Spain SLACKERS or lazy.

Stay off of facebook while in Spain. Facebook in co hoots with Spanish government ?
