Spice container holes are different now.

I recently noticed the spices I buy have larger holes. I pulled a few older ones out and sure enough, they are. It seems like a tactic to get us to waste more to come back and buy again sooner. Plus it can almost ruin a meal. I now pour spices in older containers or put tape over the new ones a poke smaller holes in them.

I've noticed this, too... and it's usually the things that absolutely *can* ruin what you're cooking. Like you don't want too much paprika but those holes on the last I bought are huge! Bigger holes in something like onion powder wouldn't matter as much because "more is better" for onion and garlic. :giggle:

If I'm adding a spice in amounts smaller than a quarter teaspoon, I shake it into the palm of my hand then apply it from my hand in a way that can be better controlled. If I accidently put too much in my hand, I still have the ability to add less from that hand.

I thought it was just me, but you're absolutely right about this.

Your tape trick sounds like just the ticket, thanks for the suggestion.

I went and took a look at my spices, since I had bought extra for the holiday cooking and baking.
Of the three I checked...
the ground ginger holes are exactly the same.
The new ground cloves and new ground sage have smaller holes than the old ones.

These are McCormick brand spices.

When I added cinnamon to my oatmeal it came gushing out. Almost too much.

Same here in Australia ….i put my thumb over half the holes …when shaking ….however I don’t use allot of spices other than salt and pepper ,and herbs …. I mainly go out to my garden and grab parsley or mint …chives / onion depending on what I’m cooking

I thought this was going to be about the holes being smaller. Ploughman’s seem ok. Checking the McCormicks, they’re ok too. The latest purchase of Club House has large holes. I don’t know if this is because it’s mustard seed or the new style.
