Sports Or Hobbies You Were Or Are Still Good At?

I was too thin to participate in any sports in high school, let alone my grades would've never been good enough.

Pro-Rodeo Team Roping: The sport I really got interested in, back in the mid 80's, was pro-rodeo. My very first rodeo and it was indoor at the Long Beach, Calif. Arena. After that rodeo, I went out and bought myself a hat, boots and Wrangler jeans. Was going to be a Saddle Bronc Rider, then, after swinging a rope loop, was told I'd make a better roper. So, next came the horse, saddle, ropes and Roping School. Got a membership into a rodeo association and it was one rodeo after another in So California. After my hip replacement in 2005, my "roping days" were over. But, I feel, and so does my wife, that I was pretty darn good on a horse, in the saddle and swinging a rope.

Anther hobby that I absolutely love to do is photography. I've taken lots and lots of photos, including some wildlife ones of Bull Elk, Moose and Buffalo.

Add power boating and freshwater fishing to that "hobby" list. Wife and I love both as well as target shooting at local Range.

What about you? Any past, or present sports or hobbies you really enjoy?

well let's see...worked around cars, trucks just about all my life...last worked as a mechanic about 1980...clerical stuff after that, and I rebuilt an old Chevy truck carburetor about 2 weeks ago for the first time in 38? years? Darnit that does not seem possible..(by the way the old 69 chev. truck now purrs like a kitten) doing this as a hobby now, used to be how I made a living!!!

The only kind of mechanic I ever was, was for my own vehicle. Even then, I left the brake jobs and other major repairs up to real mechanics.

Today, will check/add fluids, change air filter, taillight and wiper blades, but that’s it. Pro-Mecanics take over after that. Yes, it costs, but.

Have never been much of a “grease and dirt” guy.

well I have actually given u[ doing any work on my Malibu...I check fluids and the like but take it to shops for just about everything...poor thing needs a wheel bearing now...loaned it to my step daughter and it came back with a noise {wheel bearing bad} BUT no knows how that could have happened....

Back in the 80s I towed home an MG B that had a trashed engine. I resurrected it, refurbished it and my wife drove it. Her license plate said "Mumsy". Our son loved to borrow the car, but hated that tag.

I do miss the sailboats that we had years ago. They were trailer sized and we took them different places to sail.

We still boat with a 1992 20’ Celebrity Cuddy Cabin, but not nearly as much here, in Jacksonville, Fl (St John’s River) as we did on two nice lakes (Reservoirs) in Colorado. Another reason we are making plans on moving back to Colorado or into southeastern Wyoming. Deeper lakes, freshwater, beautiful Rainbow Trout and no Tides. IOW, our kind of boating and fishing!

It's hard to believe that I was really great at Volleyball when I was younger. I was always the first to get picked ! Now .... HA ! If I chased a ball,I'd need CPR !

I'm still doing my favorite hobby - art - with crafts thrown in. Now ,when I feel like it, I teach stained glass fusing and lead work. Seems like I've done everything at one time or another . I even learned to do welding ! Thank goodness I have a great husband that lets me finance my hobbies :)

I've always enjoyed "fixing" things...cars, appliances, lawn mowers, etc. I even made a career out of that "hobby"...first in the USAF, as a radar technician, and then about 3 decades of fixing broke large scale computers, and associated I/O devices. Even today, I loathe taking a car in for repairs, or calling an appliance repair person if its anything I can reasonably handle myself. In recent weeks, I repaired the refrigerator freezer...bad defrost control...and replaced a bad clutch asm., in the Dyson vacuum cleaner. On my "to do" list, before Winter, is to flush the radiator on the pickup, and replace the thermostat, and put new valve cover gaskets on the engine to resolve a minor oil leak.

I can't "hop" around like I used to, and crawling around under the car takes some careful preparation and slow moves, but I hate to think of the day when I can no longer keep things going. For plain "entertainment", I like to go fishing with the Son-in-Law, and if I were rich, I could "live" at the casino.

I think you could call gardening a hobby. I had my first garden when I was about 4 or 5 with the help of my Grandpa. I'm still pretty good at growing things. It just takes me longer. I love dragging a half dead plant home from the discount shelf in the store and nursing it back to health.

Pretty good at painting wooden crafts and furniture, embellishing with stencils, stains, etc. although crafts seem to be on their way out.

Art is alive and well but sports is another story.

Back in the day I was good at tennis and passed it on to my children who played on the UVA Junior Tennis team and HS teams. But I slowed down a few years ago and tried to pick it back up by starting with Pickleball. Did not enjoy the impact on my feet/legs.

Turns out swimming is best for me now because of no impact. It's so relaxing and yet stretches every part of me and helps keep my joints strong. I love it. Plus I walk with my dogs 3X a day.

I’m still good at swimming, biking, gardening , volley ball, cross country skiing, roller blading, horse back riding
and I still paint, sing, play keyboards, bake, woodcarve, woodturn, scroll saw, woodburn and sew
I still consider myself good at them . I do it for me and me alone.

Just how old (or young) are you???

Amateur radio. The walls of my man cave are covered with awards. I was good at photography, even did it professionally 45 years ago but have not done so in decades. Bought a new Nikon camera and after I retire next week, will get back into it. With all the digital software and ability to take hundreds of shots to get the one perfect one at no cost, has changed the hobby for me.

Trout fishing…just trout…any….trout (salmon and steelhead are trout in my skull)

Golf…frustrated 5 handicapper
Actually, sold all three sets of clubs, but recently swung some at the range with my nephew. Can still shape that dimpled orb.

Ball, any, even 9 ball.
Don’t go all 9 or 7 innings of fast pitch softball anymore, but play…some.

Hunting, with my Nikon.
Did bag a pesky muley too interested in the garden last season.
Backstrap is still addictive.
Gutting, butchering, not so much.

Woodworking (making wood smaller, eventually becoming kindling).

Walking long distance….serious, grimly determined mosey.

Writing….it’s an occasional obsession.

There’s other things, but they involve the participation of my lady..prolly doesn’t count.

Clearly a LOT younger than you

Yes, when wife and I were 58, we were doing more things

You are some 12 years younger than us. One of the later Baby Boomers, whereas we are the earlier ones.

Yep, just trout. That fish makes up a lot of the Colorado lakes. Some brown, but mainly rainbow.

Sold and gave away all of our “never used and new” saltwater fishing gear here.

We play golf, but it’s on our Wii Game in living room. No way I could walk or ride in a cart on a golf course here. Way too hot and humid!

Can’t wait to get back to the “good life” in Colorado or Wyoming.

Well, after two rotator cuff surgeries (each shoulder), a hip replacement and a little more than "some" arthritis pain, my old activities are just that...…...old and done with. Heck, with the heat and humidity here right now, we can't do anything, like taking our boat out or going to the range, like we did 10 years ago in another state. The conditions for both boating and going to the range are much better in one of the two states we are going to move to.

I used to play pickup basketball, but now only shoot baskets whenever I can. I have practiced shooting since my teenage years and became a decent scorer when in my 20's. Once my legs get tired, I keep on shooting because that's what will happen in a game. I don't stop until I've made three-pointers from three spots on the court.

I like to teach small groups of children when I sub. Usually 2 to 6 students for 20 to 30 minutes. I have given several Powerpoint presentations about sports related topics. Some last 30 minutes and one lasted two hours. I write every week and try to go walking a few times a week.

traded my 66 nova post sedan for a 66 mgb and had a blast with that car..it took quite a beating from me..this was about 71..worked as a short order cook would get off at 11-12 pm on a weekend night..throw the top down and have the alcohol in the car all iced down.think our favorite beverage was boones farm wine and brass monkey by heublin..I would drive around the bay beaches in the area in Delaware...what good times! How in the world did I survive that?

ohhh the memories...traded my 66 nova 2 door for a 66 mgb back in 70 or 71...I was about 18 or 19, worked as a short order cook and would ice down some boones farm wine (cost $1.05} or some brass monkey by heublin and go cruising around Delaware bay with a friend after closing the restaurant...had the ragtop down and it was just us, the road, the beach, the mg and well won't tell you all everything...did I get off subject? well previous post did mention an mgb!
