Sputnik: a Science Fiction film

I was in the 5th grade when Sputnik went up. Right after that our teacher started emphasizing Science and Math almost exclusively with all the other subjects put on the back burner. Gotta catch up with them Rooskies.

I remember vividly the moment when Sputnik 1 went into Earth orbit. I was in year 9 at school, 14 years old, and very excited. The adults were horrified, as if the end of the world was coming. It was Summer in Australia and the Davis Cup tennis tournament was in full swing.

I remember a cartoon showing a tennis player about to smash the satellite as it floated above the net.

That one event caused teens like me to want to study the sciences at university.

I'm kind of nostalgic for the old cold war days when we had that mutually assured destruction thing going on. We were a better behaved nation when we had another super power to keep us in check. Sure, we still bullied other smaller weaker countries in order to steal their resources but after the Soviet Union fell and we became the olnly super power we really ramped up on the bullying. It would be good for us to have some checks and balances again.
