Ssa.gov login in woes, here we go again!

So frustrating, once again S.S. failed to send DW's 1099, which we need to pay our taxes. ssa.gov is just a poorly designed/maintained website, where it is obvious that nobody's minding the store. I am thoroughly up-to-date and tech savvy, but the ssa.gov website is a nightmare beyond belief, and just doesn't have to be such a mess, if one follows the simple instructions that loop around to a failed login, without a coherent course for remedy. 🤬

As an alternative, I spent 30 minutes listening to 'elevator music' when calling +1-800-772-1213 for help...not helpful!

I didn’t get my SSA 1099.

I went in yesterday and downloaded my 1099 without problems.

I did get a notice/prompt that they want me to change my login at some point, I skipped that for now.
...as it should be. Here is what I get, they send me a confirmation code to my cellphone, I enter it where indicated on the website. Then the Next page is where they want me to input name, DOB, SS # and such. Going to the Next page I get:

So, I'm NOT trying to create an account, just trying to access the existing account. But, there is no other way to attempt login...gBYZJWYN7_8xExVuuPuA.gif

I didn't have have any issue downloading mine either. I use login.gov Are you using ID.me ? You still shouldn't be having those issues though, especially if they do send you the conformation code. Very strange that they had you enter your info again. I wasn't able to see the screenshot.

Same boat. No 1099. Tried to login twice both times I got an error with my 3 answers. Twice I requested a temp password, both times was ignored. No followup. My son retired from the IRS in IT. He told me the numbers they give are basically bogus, not manned. They want you to give up. I got all my SS for 2024 minus the Medicare, no taxes. So it's a number I hope is somewhat close to my actual total.

Who's going to check? It's going to be a crap shoot. I hope someone will flag my return & send me a corrected amount to report. Going to the local SS office is akin to trying to get emergency help at our hospital's ER. I've used the same login since 2009

Don't shoot me but I'm sure you've double checked the info you entered?

From 10/14/2024:

Soc. Sec. could get a 2.6% COLA in 2025

.Just received an official email from the SSA with a link to log on to view the new numbers. However the last time I logged onto my SSA account with their supposed new security features last year, it was ridiculously annoying difficult, endlessly going around in circles blindly through web pages without adequate directions, having to repeatedly login. Eventually succeeded using an IDme account.

I know what you mean about their website. I had login problems there about a week ago. I don't know how but somehow after trying to log in several times I was in-the page with my name just appeared . I was able to get an income verification printout. I still can't figure that out.

As someone working in high tech decades, that same strategy of discouraging phone callers has dominated many corporation strategies to help their customers since the evil Comcast era when one could rarely get anything out of customer service departments because corporate bean counters didn't want to support costs of supporting help. Of course, Comcast that originally had monopolies on land lines during the DSL era eventually paid dearly losing enormous market share because they were too greedy once they noticed they seemed to be able to ignore customers. A short term recipe they eventually rightfully got skewered for.

To be fair, part of the facet causing such strategies is because even when corporations place reasonable information to follow on their websites and within boxed product documentation, there have always been large numbers of technically ignorant lazy users that instead of READING THE F...... MANUAL, will quickly phone up customer services and then are so technically incompetent that those trying to help them quickly become bogged down on simplest issues.

Note the last company I worked for, for 8 years before retiring, was a leading VOIP business phone system corporation that companies use to robot automate their phone lines. Yes the ones if programmed so, send users frustratingly around and around in circles without ever being able to reach warm bodies. Instead they make support subscription deals with actual other commercial companies and not consumer individuals, to easily move through such labyrinths.

So when it comes to actual government organizations, the same games are being played out with those agencies having even less motivation or pressure to do anything to reach warm bodies, as long as their management is not being beat up by politicians with billy clubs. Instead of answering your phone calls, many would rather be playing computer games in their office cubes, chatting with others at coffee machines, and taking long lunch breaks.

I have already received my SSA-1099 in the mail back in 2024.
But since this discussion is talking about the site not working...
I just logged into MySocialSecurity without incident.
I had a message waiting that offered to download SSA-1099.
I logged in using Login.gov which is recommended.

No problem logging in.

I called yesterday as an irmaa appeal we dropped of 01/17/2025 does not show. 132 minutes later I got to talk to someone. It was received 01/31/2025 and has a 60 day processing time. Call back 04/01/2025. An appropriate day!

I'm using login.gov, haven't tried ID.me, I don't want to confuse matters. The ssa.gov said that if we had an old username & password established prior to 2021, that it will work....it did not.

I am looking at all possible points of possible failure, her mailing address for S.S. documents is our physical home address, which doesn't actually come to our house, but instead to a cluster box 3/4 miles up on the highway. That's a potential problem, break-ins are a problem, and mail carrier mis-delivery is more likely, which is why I prefer everything going to the Post Office. If her 1099 was put in the wrong cluster box then it was probably just thrown in the trash or...some low-life tried to use her SS number, which is printed right on the 1099. So, maybe there is a fraud hold on access to her account, which we would not know about, because we can't log on to her account. shrug.gif

Edit: I am all out of rabbits to pull out of the hat, so it looks like spending the better part of a day at the Social Security Office is inevitable...so that we can get the 1099...so that we can PAY OUR TAXES.

The first time I tried I was told to try back a bit later. So I did and it worked fine. I change my password every time I use any site connected to my money streams anyway.

I think the SSA system is trying to go totally paperless 1099s and many people just get frustrated during the tax season crush.

Wow. You really go "out" there...will all work out. No worry.

Another vote for using Login.gov on the SSA site:
Login and then it sends a pass code to phone
Enter in pass code field online
Then a terms of service screen comes up
Agree to terms of service and then my SSA profile pops right up
Easy peasy no problem
I go through that drill, after accepting Terms of Service click "next" then get a screen that wants name, birth date, SS# like this:

Screenshot at 2025-02-05 16-46-39.jpg

...after [once again] filling that in and clicking "next" I get:

Screenshot at 2025-02-05 09-02-40.png

...Which is absurd, not trying to create a new account, just trying to fickn log in to the existing account.

U do know you can't trust the Gubber-mimt right?

What is the No Brainer answer to Online Guberman's options.

It can surredly save SSN 's Payroll deductions taxing plans by removing you (the elderly guy) from existence.

Shuffle Dance moves and the sweet melodies of thas !

This link below indicates that if you have a credit freeze on any one of the three credit bureaus, you get the "cannot create an account" notice. @Nathan I think I recall you mentioning in an unrelated thread that you had placed a credit freeze (?). If that is the case, the link says you indeed have to go to the SSA office in person to sort it out and get a special activation code. No idea why the credit freeze even matters ...
How to Create a my Social Security Account When You Get an Error Message

EDIT: If the info in that article from 2019 is still correct, you can call the SSA help desk until 12:00 midnight Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. 1-800-772-1213
