Stearns and Foster beds

I'm looking for a new bed. My bed now is a Beautyrest w/those pillow top mattresses that you can no longer flip over. It's horrible. I bought it in 2007, so I'm due.

I'm considering a S & F, I know they're pricey...but I hope they are worth it. And, I've heard good things abt them.
I'm thinking Firm...and wondering how much 'give' I'll get out of it. I've tried out a couple, and the firm feels good for now.

Of course, I'll be asking these questions to the salesman. Any thoughts you'd like to share??

I'm guessing you mean mattresses? We've had 2 S&F mattresses - one pillowtop, one regular. Both developed depressions and softened edges* within 2-3 years.

They are terrible mattresses long term despite being expensive (we bought TOL models; each cost us over $2K).

On both S&F mattresses I stuck it out as long as I could but after 6 yrs couldn't stand the backaches any longer. I tried the two different types - regular first, then the pillowtop - as we really wanted to support a local company.

But it just wasn't worth it. I would not personally recommend them. Felt great to start with, but just don't wear well.

* where you sit on the edge of the mattress and it depresses so much under you, you are in danger of sliding off onto the floor!

I agree with Lethe200; we have a pricey S&F and we won't make that mistake again. We got those annoying "depressions" in our king mattress within 2 years and we are not big people. Our mattress can't be turned over, so it is rotated every couple of months. Shopping for a replacement is on my short list.

May I ask what S & F stands for in mattress lingo?

I’ve got a high top mattress that has dents in it so it’s most uncomfortable now. I need a new one.

Stearns and Foster...they are real pricey mattresses.

Thanks for heads up on the wear and tear of the mattress. I dont like hearing abt the impressions on the mattress after only 2 yrs. That's what happened w/this Beautyrest i have now. And I dont weigh much. I've rotated it abt all i can for now.

Dang...now I dont know what direction to go. I really wish I had kept my parents old bed when they passed away.

Most of us grew up with mattresses that could be flipped. Then you couldn’t buy them easily any more. Finally there were a few on the market & we paid the price for a top end one. What a pain. It’s a monthly routine of flipping or rotating to maintain the warranty. Not worth it. Especially not worth it as we’ve aged and it has become more difficult.

Next time I‘d buy a medium priced mattress that doesn’t require flipping. They’re all going to get those deep dents. Never deep enough to quite qualify for the warranty. Better to have two different mattresses over your planned time frame than deal with the work of one that’s a PITA. Literally.

The absolute nicest mattress we tested was very deep. There’s no way either one of us could have rotated this every month. It’s a good thing it was the most expensive so we had decided against it.

I'm very happy with my 'bed in a box' that I've had for 3 years now. 10" memory foam with soft and firm sides, and very easy to flip.

What are the factors that we should consider while purchasing a mattress? This is the big question that arises.

Of course my first concern is comfort. Will I get a good night's rest? My little arthritic body requires a good night's sleep in order to feel at my best in the morning and thru out the day.

I'm also concerned abt the sinking feeling that sometimes happens. The bed starts to sag....that's my biggest worry and what is now holding me back from continuing to look. I'm at a stand still. And I shouldnt be.

I was all set on the S & F till i read abt he sagging.........now Im stumped.
And, Im not fond of foam. I have a heated mattress pad I use on my bed, and I have be careful w/foam.

We also have a Beautyrest, which we bought probably 15 years ago, so we're also due. We haven't started looking yet since ours is still fairly comfortable, but not nearly as comfortable as it used to be. Be sure to post your findings. :)

I've been sleeping on a Tempur Pedic for 16 years. I tried it out of desperation because of low back pain. I'd get up walk around every two hours for relief. I went through two Serta beds - one firm & one with a pillow top.
After a week with the Tempur Pedic, I've forgotten what back & neck pain feels like. I'll get a minor backache maybe once or twice a year.

C'est Moi, did you purchase the box spring too.
I wonder if that would keep it from sagging so much?
