Stereo Systems Then and Now

Lot's of threads on music, what are you listening to now, Best Music Ever, Etc.

My question is, What are you listening to music on now?

There used to be an art to putting components together to have a kick a$$ sound system.

What do you listen to music on now?

If I can't hear it live, my preferred music delivery system is Sonos. What about you?

Sad to say, I can no longer enjoy music due to my Meniere's disease. I can't even recognize familiar tunes.

My first music system was monaural. I built a Knight Kit FM tuner and a monaural amplifier. The speaker was a 12 inch dual cone in a bass reflex cabinet that was also a Knight Kit. Stereo was new then and out of my reach. I was so excited to get that tuner that I built it in one 8 hour session. It was all tubes, no transistors. I was still a student and paid for them in monthly payments. I was making a dollar an hour pumping gas part time.

I've got a big Sansui 9090DB stereo, that I bought way back in the mid '70's. It still works great, and I have it set up in the basement with big Radio Shack speakers...15" woofers, etc. I go down there a couple of times a week, and fire it up while working out on my home gym....gobs of old vinyl from the 60's and 70's. At 120W/channel, it almost shakes the house at anything over 1/3rd volume. Awhile back, I checked on these selling on EBAY, and I could probably get 2 or 3 times what I paid for it decades ago.

These days I listen to music on my HP Pavilion laptop.

Before that, I had an overcomplicated SONY CD player similar to this one.

We still use our Sony 100w component rack we got back in the 80's. We run it through four Optimus speaker cabinets, two with 15" bottoms and two with 12" bass speakers. These days we mostly use a echo dot that's connected to it for our music selection. When the music not playing I unplug the echo dot..

Oh goodness I've had so many systems over the years, Goodmans , Marantz..Sony... stacking systems. separates..etc...

Now I listen to music, on Youtube, or spotify...or Amazon echo, Google Home, or the radio/cd player in my car.. although I can't remember the last time I put a cd into the player, I do always have the radio on when I'm in the car...

We have an older stereo system in the living room, around 5 units on shelves in a glass/wood stereo piece. In the basement we have a small stereo on a wall unit shelf. Both these stereos have separate speakers. Small Bose CD player in bedroom, portable CD player that runs on batteries for camping trips.

An interesting Thread...☺

I have an audio set up my late Husband bought back in the 70'sand a pair of QUAD electrostatic ESL speakers and they have been us for decades and I have kept them in my lounge and loathe to part with them along with the QUAD amplifier and audio equipment that gives the sound. The ESL model range fetches a very good price now and my speakers are sought after.

My Husband loved music and good quality audio equipment from a young man back in the 60's and I shared his love of his hobby.

Yes, I listen to Apple Music on my Bose speaker and it can be taken room to room or outside. Streaming is great but I love the audio set up Ive had for decades as it meant so much to my hubby and our two Sons.

Having been almost brought up on 'Practical Wireless' and other similar magazines, it was no surprise that I built a lot of my own kit in the 60's. I used valves (vacuum tubes) initially,
before advancing to transistors. I also built my own bass guitar amps and did Electrical & Electronic engineering at Uni.

Now I still use my Technics receiver with 100W rms / channel (H+ class) and a pair of Bowers & Wilkins floor standing speakers. For the vinyl I have a Sony direct drive turntable with a
Goldring cartridge.

In my man cave back in the days before it was called a man cave, I had the whole shebang. Akai reel to reel with 8 track player, Sony reel to reel, Teac reel to reel, Kenwood amp, Sansui reverb, Pioneer headphones, Pioneer turntable, Pioneer CS99 speakers. 🙂
All that and now, I just go with youtube to mp3 converter and listen to all my music on a thumb drive. o_O
After seeing what just the speakers still go for today on ebay, I'm a little sad that I got rid of all that great gear.

6 speaker surround sound. Same system we run our TV on. I still have a turntable that is used once in awhile, but mostly use cd's or pick up music from cable.

For years I had a Pioneer tuner/amp, speakers, and turntable and an Akai reel to reel tape deck that I bought in the Navy Exchange at Subic Bay in 1967. Got rid of it all in one of my moves in the 90s.
