Sticker shock price for food.

Robert, to save money and eat a well balanced diet you need to cook. Not just eggs and salad. Do you know how to cook or did your girlfriend do all the cooking?

Yes, eating fast food is really expensive and it should only be a treat now and then. Tell us if and what you can cook. I am sure people will share recipes and tell you how to make different things. There are a lot of men on the forum that are very good cooks. If you do not know how, you can learn.

My neighbor used to order delivery (pizza, etc.) every day. Then he bought a freezer and started cooking at home. (For health reasons I think.) He was amazed at how much cheaper it was.

Now that I have the winter blahs, I buy ice cream, chocolates, etc. They're expensive too. I could easily double my food bill by buying that junk (I can eat a lot of junk). Thank goodness I don't want to go out in the winter, or I'd be going to the store every day. $$$

I honestly can’t comment on how expensive eat out meals are……I haven’t sat down in a restaurant for almost 4 years, not sure I would be allowed, don’t know if I know how to act in a restaurant……I do miss going out to eat…..but…..here in town, thanks to Covid, we only have 1 small restaurant,Subway, and a summer time drive in place, and a Chinese place.
Other small towns close places are almost nonexistent.
Coffee out, very few times.
Many choices about an hour away, and I’m sure the prices would have skyrocketed there…..drive there by myself to eat, no thanks, and I do shopping online, so that’s not an excuse to go.
Want to buy expensive food…..just have to go to the grocery store…..but that’s healthier.

Robert: Fast food is "pretend food" - full of sodium, carbs, bad fats and unpronouceable (sp?) ingredients.

Is there a grocery store that delivers groceries?

One of the local grocery stores deliver prepared meals daily - my daughter looked at their "menu" with choices including diet restrictions. I MIGHT try this delivery next winter. One of the neighbours (single male) has this service and he is very pleased with it.

This this a good idea for you @Robert59 There are a variety of places that have pre-made, reasonably healthy meals.

You could also try some of the prepared, grocery aisle frozen meals a few days a week. Start doing some simple cooking at home on other days. Anything is less expensive and healthier than ordering from fast food places.

Wow! Might be time to consider a State move @Robert59 . Seriously, nasty price for KFC. My last treat to daughter and I was a Bucket Family Meal and that was 19.99. 10 pieces, coleslaw, gravy and four chips plus a box of hot wings.

I've been disappointed by them. The Grecian bread has disappeared, no more mash potatoes option and the white cabbage coleslaw now has carrots and they no longer offer honey as a dip.

Our takeaway Medium Pizza Stuffed Crust plus large chips and gravy delivered is about 18 something. Yesterday at my local supermarket, we got a large pepperoni pizza thin crust for 4.75 it was better than the takeaway. I split it in two and froze the rest.

At local supermarkets, I spend an average of 55 a week from the pre-pandemic prices of 45 a week. 3.50 ready meals for two-three people are a bargain at Iceland shop. Had to ditch longtime loyal supermarket after hubby died. My planned order last June came to 155 without delivery.

I wasn't best pleased... Cancelled it, took lists to another shop, Lidl, and my total 75 for all the same and better tasting I might add.

A wee bit of work is required, investigation and comparison at the supermarket and find recipes for at home KFC and pizza. Good luck!

We stopped at the local grocery store yesterday, and eggs were "ONLY" $3 a dozen....down from $5 last week. We bought 2 cartons. Nearly everything else was at, or above, recent high prices.

It may take a severe recession....which many "experts" are predicting....before we see any decline in all these prices.,

I haven't had KFC for years. My son loved it when he was a kid. But, I just looked up prices. My local KFC has a special offer of 8 pcs of chicken for $10.

An 8 pc meal is $27.29 that includes 2 family sized sides.

Something I often get for takeout is a Cobb salad. It has grilled or breaded chicken. That might be a good alternative for a chicken craving.

Food prices have definitely gone up considerably, even excluding eggs (which are a hopefully relatively short-lived anomaly due to widespread bird flu).

I've always had a good memory for prices and my observations show that since early 2020 prices are up between 30% - 50% across the board. Sometimes more. What was $1.99 is now $2.99. What was $.99 is now $1.29 or higher. I don't care what "official" statistics show, the proof is on the shelves and the cash register tally.

Sometimes this is achieved with smaller packaging, sometimes with higher prices, sometimes both. Unprocessed foods are no exception. Example: a 16 oz bag of dried garbanzos was 99¢ for many years - right up to early 2020. Now it's $1.29.

But wait, doesn't that package seems a little light? Yup, it's shrunk to 12 oz. So in three years it's gone from 6.19¢/oz to 10.8¢/oz.

I just checked online. A 16 piece bucket of KFC is $29.99 here. Their most expensive meals (example: a soda, two sides, three pieces of chicken, plus a biscuit) run $11.99. Are you having it delivered from 30 miles away or something?
I recall Robert writing about this purchase a couple of years ago, or so. It was a convoluted explanation with ordering and someone else picking it up and big tip, etc. My impression at the time was that someone took advantage of his generosity. At least, that’s how I recall it.

The only time I go out to eat is when my bf takes me. So he pays.

Meat here has gone down here too. I can get various family packs on sale, marked down or 2 for 1. Then I buy a couple and break them down into single servings. Eggs are back down to $2.36 a dozen.

Many foods are in the smaller packages now. Instead of 16 oz. it is now 12 oz. So if you need that extra 4 oz. you have to buy two.

Saturday morning bought a Safeway small fried chicken strip for $1.10 (sold at $9.50/pound) then later during a urban 3 mile walk, stopped at a Whole Foods and bought a $3.29 fat pepperoni pizza slice. Then Sunday bought a delicious McChicken sandwich at McDonalds for $3.39. Items I normally just treat myself to such fast food maybe once a month, so that is now over. Cheap is still out there but yeah much has dramatically inflated. Worse for we smaller folk, most restaurants only sell more expensive food sizes for the dominant numbers of people that prefer large food sizes. Small custom quantities are however still available at supermarket deli counters.

KFC charges $50 for a meal? That doesn't make any sense to me.
That is because it is not true, if you do not buy a package offered but order individual meals according to everyone's preference it becomes way more expensive, add the delivery, add the tip you are there.
