I retired 4-15-2018 and I got on BCBS F & D for my supplement insurance and I've been more than happy with their coverage but when they sent me a notice last fall telling me that my 'D' was going up to around $82.00 per month I started looking around.
Mama retired last August and after talking and comparing her prescriptions with our independent insurance agent we went with Humana 'D' for her for only $20.40 per month.....luckily there was a 'open enrollment' period and after comparing my prescriptions I switched from my BCBS 'D' to Humana 'D' which began Jan. 1st of this year saving me $61.60 per month.
Mid last week mama went to refill my high blood pressure medicine (the generic for Atacand) at Walmart and my part was going to be $229.00 for 90 days with Humana whereas on BCBS it was only $35.00 out of pocket for 90 days.....mama declined refilling the prescription, came home and told me and I got on the phone with my cardiologist and told her to see if there was something as good but less expensive than the generic for Atacand.
The next day she called back and said that she was switching me to Losartan which would in my case be just as good and that it should be considerably cheaper and that she'd already called the prescription into Walmart for me.
Mama went back to pick up my new Losartan prescription and it was only $7.00 for 90 days.....now I'm not the sharpest tack in the box but even I can tell that $7.00 is one heck of a lot less than $229.00.
I guess the moral of the story is, if you've been given a prescription that is overly expensive call your doctor back and have him or her "Take The Time" (having them Take The Time is the key) to look for something less expensive but just as good.
