Stock market is sinking fast!

The beginning of a new year sees stocks losing value at a record pace. However, you are advised not to panic and should consider this a buying opportunity, but are you buying it?

I have kind of a preschool knowledge of the stock market. From what I understand there are cycles of the market doing really good for years. Then there has to be a process like a fish tank cycling where the market will predictably not be doing well for several years. Then it balances itself eventually. I guess the problem comes to people who are depending on their investments for retirement. When the market is sunk the stocks aren't worth much. Does that kind of sum up what's happening?
