Six stone-cut graves at the ruins of St Patrick's Chapel, Heysham. Sunset last tonight. It was a bit windy - luckily the wind was blowing me away from the drop off the cliff! Wrestling with camera settings and an old fully manual wide angle lens. FUN FUN FUN!
These 6 graves are carved into the natural bedrock. Their exact date is uncertain, but they probably date to before the Norman Conquest (1066). All of them have socket holes, probably intended for timber crosses, at the head end. An associated cemetery to the south of the chapel was excavated in the 1970s and the bones and Viking artifacts there were dated to the 10th and 11th centuries.
