Stood up by contractor

I was scheduled to have a contractor come and put on that storm door to the deck today. Even yesterday afternoon he said he was coming today when I touched base with him. I planned my whole day around this. I even got the door out of the garage a propped it up outside for his convenience. Around 11 am I got a PM saying he couldn't come. No explanation or offer to reschedule. My PMs to him are being unanswered. Now I don't know what to do, if I get someone else and he decides to show up, then what?
Why is it always me?

I was posting about this on FB and someone replied that contractors don't always take jobs in chronological order - if they get another job that will pay more, they will bump you down. You could be bumped down indefinitely if they keep getting higher paying jobs. They aren't going to give preference to a $100 job when they can get $1500 for another.

How many PMs have you sent since last night? If he considers it too many, he may just walk away. It would be nice if heā€™d explained, which is what he should have done. Finding a contractor for a small job is almost impossible.
 
I'm fortunate, I've never in my recollection had a contractor not turn up to do a job the day they said they would..

At the weekend I had a tree chopped down, and I asked if they would return , and do some trimmings of my very high Laurel hedge and some other trees that need topping. They took my phone number and said they'd text one day this week to say when they'd be around.. I'm still waiting.. but I still think they'll come
 
Note to All

Never pay a contractor in full up front. They'll do a half-assed job then disappear in many cases. Always pay half, then the rest after the completion of the job. This way if you are unsatisfied with the work, you still have room to barter.
 
Someone may have already suggested this, but a web site,Yelp.com, can sometimes be helpful in finding local businesses that are well liked and rated by their customers. They are commonly used for restaurant ratings, but also rate contractors.
 
At the start of this month, a guy was coming out to look at a possible fault in our sewerage treatment plant. He requested that the unit be empty, so I arranged for that service which cost me Ā£130, and they went to the trouble of doing it the first job on a specific day and the guy was informed and agreed with that date. He never turned up and said he would call in a few days and get it emptied again. Not ruddy likely, so we left it empty. I had a pee for a few days in the garden, and my 78-year-old wife took a long walk to the local Garden Centre and used their toilet. Just as well as he never turned up again.
So we are back using it, a possible Ā£17- Ā£25,000 job, these days in the UK, nobody wants work and those that do, want Heart surgeon money for cutting grass.

Oh how I hate old age stopping me from doing ALL my own jobs.

Give the plumber some credit, he did turn up to fix the shower and I had the new replacement part. The problem was he never had the 45 mins time to fit it, but his call incurred a cost. We live like cave dwellers in this house, guess I will end up dragging myself up into the loft disabled and 84 years old as the youngsters cannot manage it.
Same with the grass outside, 27 years I have been cutting it, now in great pain. Why are people such lazy sods?
