Stopping junk mail from being delivered to your mail box

I am getting junk mail for a swimming pool we haven't owned in 20 or 30 years! It was so old and wasn't being used after the kids moved out and the maintenance was just too costly for it to sit there and look pretty. So, we had it filled in. We are still getting catalogs for swimming pool products, etc. Has anyone tried any online sites that claim you can put a stop to the junk mail? If so, do they work?

It used to be if you notified the Direct Marketing Association in writing you didn't want junk mail they were supposed to take you off the list. Same for telephone solicitors. If you tell the individual company and solicitor no more ads they are supposed to listen. There are also many opt out clauses on just about any agreement one signs even if a receipt for a purchase. There are opt out clauses because one will automatically opted in to receive marketing materials. In other words the onus is on the consumer to tell the advertising companies no junk mail.

You know you're on some computer list somewhere. Sorry, but if you can't erase your info from that computer, your doomed to keep getting stuff. My uncle died of a disease. My aunt said to donate to the disease fund, in lieu of flowers. I did. One of the dumbest things I ever did. I got mail from every damn disease organization. I know my uncle's disease org. gave my name and address away because I stupidly misspelled my name, "Richrad", when I gave. And that's the name on the mail I got. They dogged me for years. They spent so much money asking for money, you wonder how much they gave away.

I wonder that about many organizations that ask for money. From the ones that pay professional fundraisers to host a fundraiser, to the ones who send out all the mail like you describe, to the ones that send you a personalized, printed letter every time you send a donation (but won't let you donate through PayPal, which is free), I wonder they have any money left over for the ones who actually need it.

You will never get rid of junk mail or the solicitations. You,(or more accurately your name and information.) are what powers the world economy. Every thing you do, leaves a bit of data, I no longer care, it is futile.
If you are running from or towards any particular charity take a look here:

I've been divorced for over 20 years but still live in the same house. Besides the deluge of junk mail that I receive, I also receive junk mail addressed to my son (age 40), who has not lived here for 18 years, from 'senior' advertisers. Some are addressed to us as husband and wife. Add to the list of certainties of death and taxes.... junk mail.

You don't know which computer system has your info. I don't have high blood pressure. No matter how many times I got that erased from my medical records, it keeps coming back. My medical insurance company is always sending me happy, helpful, caring, (ya know just between us friends{rolling your eyes Emoji}) reminders to get my blood pressure checked.

I've made a few donations in memory of people, following those "in lieu of" instructions. And that, of course, immediately got me on their lists. They are worse than annoying; they are deceptive. One of them keeps sending me mail telling me my membership has expired, and it's time to renew. What membership? Giving a donation made me a member?

It's really too bad, as the are probably worthy causes, but their pestering mail has turned me off from ever wanting to be a member, or even a donor ever again.

Friday, my first wife, who passed away in 2002, got a "Happy Birthday" postcard (and a 20% discount code) from Henri Bendel, which is a New York based upscale women's shop. Since 2002 I've moved to Florida and then Hawaii. It has the current address. Go figure.

You are wasting your time writing on the envelope and returning it to your carrier. Bulk rate mail is not returned to the sender but just thrown away(recycled) when your carrier gets back to the Post Office.
Every business transaction you make, from buying a package of Mac and Cheese to paying for your Erectile Dysfunction medication leaves a trail that any savvy marketer would be remiss in not following.
I just walk from the mail bo to the recycling can,and accept the world as it is.

If junk mail is from repeat senders, who are legit businesses, there's usually a number or email address on the flyer/brochure/letter. Call them direcyly to get off the list. I know it's a pain, but does work.
