Strange and unexplainable sounds following me

I'm a very active/fit and hopefully still cognitively sound now retired 78year male.
I frequently take a 12min walk from my home to a nearby bay via pedestrian tunnel leading to a hillside footpath approx. 3mt above a main road. Several weeks ago partway down the elevated footpath I experienced a physically close loud snapping sound like dry wood cracking or small caliber gunshot. I looked around saw nothing that could cause the sound then continued walking. Some 20mins later after I crossed over a waterway bridge it happened again. I thought maybe its in my head, I have constant tinnitus (inner ear sound) or maybe its a joint cracking C vertebrae in my neck.

Since then I experienced this same unexpected sudden crack sound several times in different locations and each time alone, the most recent at our front door while I was hosing down patio tiles.
My wife returned home last Saturday after a three weeks visiting her family overseas. On Sunday 10th mid afternoon we went for a walk, not to the bay but along a built up street, the day was cold but sunny otherwise nothing unusual. Fifteen mins into our walk and again I heard the crack almost gunshot like sound and so did my wife.

So its not just me hearing the very distinctive sound nor is it just in my head. I have no idea of what or how or why it is happening but if any readers have experienced similar I would be very interested in your thoughts because I'm completely stymied a bit spooked and uncertain of what this could be leading too

Hi Mendi, Thanks for joining us. I've never experienced sounds like you described. You indicated your wife also heard it. Does she have any ideas? Seems that if it was coming from inside your body, you would have accompanying physical sensations.

Not knowing where you live, but If you have large trees abound, it's limbs breaking.
Most all with timber experiences have heard them many times.

Yep our timbers are dying quicker and faster than we can ever guess.
Tons of young trees, under 10" diameter trunks are falling to the ground every year
in every timber area. say 5 / 10 acres. Trash / Vines are suffocating. There are no
Husbandry of our forests / Timbers that exists now.

I hear cracks and rumbles all the time where I live and here it is squirrels jumping onto weak tree branches/limbs and the branches breaking or falling. Sometimes they hit on something that bangs when struck. It's getting into acorn season now and those things sound like bullets when they hit a metal roof or building.
