Yes, it's very different. I have lived here my entire life. Of course, there are seedy areas almost everywhere, not only in NYC. Tourists love to come here. Try finding some videos of Central Park to start with.

My daughter has been to NYC twice, and to California twice.. ... I wasn't looking for seedy areas to post , I was looking for Vintage videos.. and these were the ones that came up the most often... I'm always fascinated by the videos of place back in the day. I wish we had many of where I grew up, but there just doesn't seem to be any..
