One little boy said he heard another kid yell out " Watch out!" after he noticed the bus driver wasn't paying attention to the road. Thank God there were no serious injuries or fatalities.
I'm amazed at the number of school districts which don't have seat belts on the bus seats. THAT should be mandatory. Last Spring, in one of the local towns, there was a school bus wreck, and it was discovered that the driver was "texting" on her cell phone. She got fired, and the student injuries were minor, but it's just pure luck that some of them didn't get seriously hurt.
Wow, that could have been a real disaster. Unbelievable that no one was seriously injured. I do remember there was a belief that constraints on buses were not a good idea, I actually forget why though. Viewing that crash reenactment, you have to wonder where that idea came from!
Safety belts are a good idea but it seems to me anyway that there seems to be an uptick in school bus accidents. Maybe it's more access to news of these accidents but years ago it seemed one could years without seeing or hearing a story about school bus accidents. Probably a different breed of driver.
Some of the stuff I see school bus drivers do or try one never saw decades ago. They always seem to be in a hurry. Around here they got many neighbors upset because the drivers are allowed to take their bus home for lunch/middle of the day since the basically work a split shift. But almost all live in the town and the farthest border from the school bus lot is less than 4 miles. There's no commercial vehicle parking yet one can park a big yellow bus.
