Scientists have found that moderate and regular internet usage might appear to have cognitive benefits for older individuals. The study, published in the August edition of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found that, in fact, prolonged internet usage in late adulthood was correlated with a delay in cognitive impairment.

I think that certainly applies to regular use of Senior Forums!

I think witnessed this in reverse. Know someone who got physicall ill/bed ridden for several months which ment they never made it to their computer. Same old every day except for free tv news casts. Until stuck in bed they were on the computer/internet every day.

Maybe they had early signs of dementia I don't know but the dementia didn't seem really obvious until they were in bed for several months. In a month's span they seem to have lost recent or short term memory. They can't even remember the details of them being admitted to a nursing home(should note sometimes they like to play dumb to avoid responsibility)

But as noted in op keep the mind active and expose to different things. Just like the physical body. Can't do the exact same workout every day and not get stale.

I think that it is more than just internet use which can help prevent dementia; it depends on what you are doing on the internet that makes the difference.
If you are just using the internet to watch silly videos, or old TV shows and movies, you are probably not stimulating your mind as much as you are self-hypnotizing it , the same as being in the recliner and in front of the TV all day long.

However, when you are searching out information and learning about new things, then you are keeping your mind active, and helping it to work better.
I have discovered a lot of information online, both reading and watching videos, and it inspires me to think more. Belonging to forums helps me to have interactive conversations , and that it s good thing as well.

So true ... and that's also why I play the word games here. Some people dismiss them as childish games, they're missing the point. ...the word games are meant not for intellectual stimulation but to keep the brain cells oiled..
