Study: Spanking Your Kids Is Good for Nothing

Times were sure different back in the day... such a stark difference compared to today.
Absolutely!

And I suspect that for most of human existence corporal punishment was quite common. And it probably still is today in much of the world. I suspect it is only our wealthy western culture that has (mostly) put an end to it. Not that I am saying we are wrong, it probably is for the best (maybe). Only saying we are now the anomaly, physically discipling kids is and has been the standard.

I never got a spanking when I was growing up. My dad was so gentle and kind that the thought of me disappointing him was enough to keep me in tow.
All my mom had to say when I got out of line was, "what would daddy think of what you did?"
When my kids were growing up I didn't spank them either but I have to admit to giving them a quick cuff on top of the head every now and then.
I doubt they even felt it and in most cases I was swatting the air.
Most of the time I'd send them to their room for some alone time until we all calmed down.

I do remember being belittled, criticized and treated as stupid by vindictive, spiteful parents.
I think that's even worse.

In spite of the spankings, it's the criticism I remember most -- and it was actually not that often. The sad thing is my parents were really wonderful people who worked hard and sacrificed a lot for their children, they just seemed to think it was their job to correct every tiny fault in us, and they never guessed how dispiriting that could be.
