Stupids Are Being Ripped Off Again.

Reading this morning newspaper has again proved to me that there is something very wrong with our society. I am talking about 2 stories:
1. First story tells us that "Personal & Business Insolvencies Rise". It says that people have amasse unmanageable debts. I'm not surprised when I see so many people flying off for winter vacations & driving brand new SUVs.
2. Second story tells us that, thanks to Atlantic City casinos, we now can gamble using slot machines right on line. Hack, you can sit in your underwear & blow all your money for groceries & the electric bill too. You no longer have to even go to a casino.
For the record, I never gamble but I have often been & stayed in casinos for the accommodation & the meals in Canada & the USA. Forget those silly Hollywood myths about breaking the casino at Monte Carlo or Roger Moore or other associated Agent 007 types gambling. What I have seen over the years gambling are the elderly, the lonely & the addicts that blow all their money in one night. Internet gambling is just another way society is picking on the poor, the uneducated & the lonely. Forget the fact that we all should have choices! That's OK for the educated & those who have no trouble saying "NO". Shame for picking on the weak elements of our society.
 

Guess I used the wrong wording. Instead of "Stupids" I should have said "the weaker segment of our society". I don't like to see someone being kicked when they are already down.
 
I never cared for gambling myself. I was around it long ago. My first husband was a gambler and he took me to a casino in one of the islands, I can't remember exactly. It was before Atlantic City and the other casinos around here. The first time there, I hated it. He played blackjack and could sit there for hours. I have to say he was pretty lucky and did okay. One time we went on a cruise with friends and my husband, the other man and his wife could not stay out of the casino on board. They kept saying it was fixed and no one can win. The other man kept going to an ATM on board to get more money off his credit cards. I went in one night after dinner and the woman we were with got me to place a bet on the roulette wheel. I did and I won. $250. my first time! I was done. She could not stand it that I wanted to leave after that. I did. I went back to our cabin and read magazines while the three stayed all night gambling. I think that was the last time for me. After that he went on his trips to casinos with his gambling friends. At least he'd bring me back expensive gifts which I call his guilt money.
 

We went to quite a few casinos in our travels, I loved the slot machines, we always went in with $20 n when it was gone we left, we usually broke even. Bill won $600 once n out the door we went! When the slot machines stopped spitting out money it took the fun out of it so we stopped going,

Disagree. "Society" is not picking on the poor. There are simply far too many people who just won't run their lives to their benefit. Being 'poor' doesn't make you gamble. Being 'uneducated' doesn't make a path for you to get to the casino. It is true with the demographics that these groups tend to gamble.
It comes to the never ending question for which everyone has an opinion but no generally agreed upon answer: Why do poor people make such poor decisions?
 
The other question on this: Why do some poor people make such good decisions? What is different about them? Why do a handful come out of the Chicago projects (or their ilk) and go on to be educated, successful? What's different from their neighbors?

This will open a can of worms, so I won't go there, although the answer is painfully obvious, to me......

You can edit the title. It’s still under 24 hours. Just hit edit and change the title . It doesn’t offend me any. I just thought you might want to know.
 
We are casino fans, and have been going to the local casinos for over 20 years....plus, we usually take a 3 or 4 day vacation to Las Vegas every year.
We usually go to the local casinos every 3 or 4 weeks, for 2 days, and stay overnight in a nice free room. Over a years time, we probably spend a month gambling. I recently pulled our Win/Loss statements for 2019, and we lost slightly over $4300, for the entire year. When you consider the costs of taking a "normal" vacation....a 5 day cruise, etc., spending $4300 for 30 days of fun/vacation seems quite reasonable, by comparison.

I've got one number for mega millions and one number for power ball I've been playing for several years. I won $100 once. I can't imagine how I would feel if I didn't get my tickets one week and my numbers came up.
 
I don't mean to offend anyone with my casino gambling comment. I was just answering it for me and how I felt about it. I was not poor and my husband could afford to lose. I have bought lottery tickets and won $150. one time.
 
I'll play the lottery sometimes. Not Powerball or Mega Millions the odds stink. Sometimes my numbers win several times in a row. Once I won $25 and put it in the church building fund. Thought it would be fun to do that since the preacher believed in thou shalt not play the lottery. Didn't like the guy. He got up in front of the church with his bills one Sunday and read how much each one was. He then complained how hard it is to live on $30,000 a year. His wife is president of a local company raking in millions. :rolleyes: I'm living on less than half that so I thought I'd share my lottery fortune with his church. Haha. People really are intolerable.
 
I've been to the casino 3 times in my life. It's ok, it doesn't really excite me. The first time, I won 40. something... The last two times, I don't remember how much I lost, but it was well below the 100. I set aside.

The first and last times we ate there... good food!

I have bought a few lotto tickets, but aside from some gift scratch-offs at Christmas, I haven't bought myself a lottery ticket in many years.
 
When I go to a casino, I like to people watch while my wife tries her luck on the slots. I see a lot of elderly folks in those places. Some are barely able to walk and others use a walker, cane or power scooter. Some of the other people look like they don't have two nickles to rub together.

Thanks for the tip. I have been educated & will keep this in mind. Knowledge is power! By the way, the casinos like to call it "gaming" but in reality it is gambling. Suckers hoping to change their lives.
