Sunday Drives, Then and Now...

I loved our Sunday drives. I remember going for many drives during the winter to look at all the water that had frozen as it seeped out of the rocks. Some along the way to the Delaware water gap. Just beautiful. In the fall we would look for old apple and pear trees and would pick up the fallen fruit or pick berries. My Grandma would then make all sorts of things from them. In the summer we would just ride until we found a nice place to stop for a picnic lunch. Sometimes along a stream or lake. The picture shows me when I was about 2 or 3 years old with my Mom,Grandma and Dad. View attachment 60200
that's beautiful ; captures the good life back then

My family didn’t just go on a Sunday drive, either unplanned or with a destination. What we did do, in the summertime, was go camping over the weekend at some lake where my folks liked to fish.
Mom would fry chicken and make potato salad, and packed food to make breakfast with (over the campfire), and Grandpa Bailey would have his old wooden boat loaded on top of his Ford, and away we would go for the weekend.

I discovered this picture on facebook today, and this is a really old car (anyone ever seen one of these and know what kind it is ?) that was touring in Snoqualamie pass , east of Seattle. I love that it had 4 rows of seating, and wonder if it was made special for tours in national parks or something similar . Anyway, it looks like people out for a Sunday drive and having lots of fun !

Does anyone remember Sunday drives on quirky roads? Steep hills, roller coaster roads, those berms that play a tune in your car from vibrations??? Burma shave sign roads?
What special roads do you remember?
Sure. However... there were some roads you should avoid during Vermont's fifth season. (that be mud season). ;)

We had Sunday drives but mostly to go sight seeing in cities around where we lived, NYC, Washington DC and Philadelphia. I guess Dad liked to show us these towns but they were fun to see. He added some history to them. There are photos of the places with us kids in them. We look so funny, now in our clothes and goofy smiles.

Oh yeah, I remember those Sunday drives. Me and my kid brother in the back seat. Wherever we were going my dad knew a "shortcut". I don't know how he did it, but every "shot cut" landed us on a dirt road. When you got in the car, you knew you were going to wind up on a dirt road.
The good thing was were always stopped at this ice cream stand.

Sunday drives were a regular thing for my family. Sometimes we’d go to the mountains or visit a relative or just ride around the county. We had a lot of Sunday visitors as well, sometimes one group would leave and another would show up 🙃
