Supermarket Express Lanes, Do You Count Your Items?

I don't use the Supermarket express lanes much anymore.
When I do visit a supermarket I usually do a lot of shopping so am not eligible for the fast checkout.
I also prefer to shop very early in the morning when there are usually fewer people in the store and not much of a lineup at the cashier.

I'll do self-checkout if I only have a few items, and transition to express if I have more than a few but am within their limit of 15 items or so. If I'm in a regular line and am invited by an unoccupied express cashier to come to them, I'll accept the invitation; there's no need to suffer angst over it. If only regular check-outs are available, I'll invite shoppers behind with only a few items to go ahead of me, and when in their situation I've been graciously so invited myself. It's all part of "paying it forward..."

I use the smart shop in our supermarkets. Scan Bag and Go... no waiting in line at the cashier or uploading a ton of groceries onto the belt only to have to pack them all again ( our checkout assistants don't pack goods)... Simply take the price gun at the entrance, scan each item before you put it into your bag .. then go to the self checkout which never has any queues, and pay...

That’s unique. We don’t have anything like that around here yet. Haven’t even heard of it until now.

Do they have a way to make sure everyone scans everything?

Frankly from the stories I’ve heard re theft at the self-checkouts, I’d be shocked if it would work here.

Well, they have no way of ensuring everyone scans everything, but before you can scan anything you have to scan your store card which of course has all your personal details on it ..and in a few stores your debit card. They obviously lose some to theft but overall I think people are trustworthy, but of course if they're caught not having scanned items in their bag there's no denying who they are , which means they'll not only potentially be arrested but they'll be banned from every store in the chain, in the whole of the country

It is a rare day that I qualify for an express lane, but when I do, I make certain I am legal.

A while back I was in an express lane (15 items) and I recognized the guy ahead of me and noticed he had about 8 items in his basket. Among them were two six packs of soft drinks. Since I knew the guy, I thought I'd pull his chain a bit. I loudly said, "Hey Mister, you have too many items for this lane." He started to argue but I said that each can of Coke counted as an item.

It was about that time I realized I didn't know the guy that I thought I recognized - so an apology was made and we had a good laugh about it. I'll not do that again though - - unless I'm sure I know who I'm talking to.

How do you feel about the express lanes, any problems with them? Do you count your items and abide by the rules?
I usually do, however yesterday I got in the express lane(15 items or less) without thinking, but then realized that I might have more than 15 items. I did a count, was 3 over so I didn't worry, especially since hardly anyone was in the store.

When I use an express lane at the supermarket, I usually do a quick count on my items, if it's over the limit, I go to a regular check-out lane. It bugs me when I see people with a full cart at these registers.

It just happened to me again at a Kroger store. I had a lot of items, and was standing in a regular lane. The express cashier walked over to me and said he'd take me at his register. I told him I'm way over the limit, that was okay, I wasn't in a hurry. He insisted, so I ended up moving over a register.

Even though they invite you, and insist really, I feel funny about going to an express lane with a lot of items. Sure enough a guy came behind me with around four items, and looked at my full conveyor belt. I imagined what he was thinking, lol.

It doesn't bother me if someone is over the limit in the express lanes. If you don't too many items that need to be weighed or don't have a bar code you get through pretty quickly..
My nearest grocery store now has self checkout where the express lane used to be. 6 self checkouts with an attendant who has to sign you for a few items like beer or a non barcoded item that you can't find.
Previously I had to get into a checkout that had a beer lane sign. This is much easier for me.
You must pay by cash or card. No checks allowed.

ROFLMAO!

Now that is a classic! :)

Sometimes the express lane has more people in line than the regular check out so I take my three items and wait until the one ahead with twenty-five items goes through. I usually get out faster that way anyway.
