Surgeon jailed after amputation of own legs

So, this story is weird in several ways. Yet when you get to the bottom of it, the usual motivators are prevalent.

In short (sic), a surgeon who removed limbs in his professional life, decided that if he faked injury (which he caused himself using dry ice) he would have to have his own legs amputated. Once done, he could claim - you guessed it - an insurance payment. He got close to £500K.

If that was the entire story, then it would be strange enough. But then, to quote from the article, "The court heard Hopper, who admitted two counts of fraud and three of possessing extreme pornography, had a "sexual interest in amputation."

So, this guy is now left without his legs, likely without the money, and the end to his career.

But then, "Hopper did not regret the operations, but "bitterly regrets" the "dishonesty" about their cause." I don't even want to guess what the "extreme pornography" was.

Wow.

An NHS vascular surgeon who had his own legs removed has been jailed for two years and eight months for insurance fraud and possessing extreme pornography.

Neil Hopper, 49, of Truro, Cornwall, carried out hundreds of amputation operations before having his own legs removed in 2019.

Truro Crown Court heard he lied to insurers by claiming that injuries to his legs were the result of sepsis and not self-inflicted.

It heard that in May 2019 Hopper had below knee amputations after a "mysterious illness". In fact he had used ice and dry ice to freeze his own legs so they had to be removed, said prosecutor Nicholas Lee.

The court heard Hopper, who admitted two counts of fraud and three of possessing extreme pornography, had a "sexual interest in amputation".

Judge James Adkin said in sentencing that he accepted that Hopper, who had no previous convictions, was remorseful.

Oh my goodness, Scrappy, you've outdone yourself with that one! :ROFLMAO:

But anyhow, back to the topic. Yeah, totally bizarre, but ya know what struck me first as crazy? Giving up his LEGS for [what in this case I do believe is...] a measly half million £ pounds? I suppose for double that much, some people may consider but... am I off-base there?

£500K is not a lot of money for cutting off both legs. Not sure what he was thinking. Perhaps there is more money down the road in terms of monthly payment...
🙄

So this guy gets turned on by cutting off his own legs? How way out there is that? That’s really demented. I can’t believe I even read this.

Well, it's not a very good long-term sexual preference. I mean, now sans legs, I guess he's celibate? I'm not sure he thought this through.

Oh my goodness, Scrappy, you've outdone yourself with that one! :ROFLMAO:

Love right back at ya.

There are so many layers to this story. At first it seems like a simple enough perversion, but on examination it goes deep. For example, if he has a sexual fetish for this, what of all the patients he's treated over the years? What was going through his mind with them?

Now he's been jailed. But note - not for injuring himself and having his legs amputated, but for the financial fraud. The story mention extreme pornography, but I'm not sure what definition they're using - I don't know what kind of pornography in his preference would be deemed illegal.

People are..............strange. But then, my preferences may be strange to others, who knows? But I'm keeping all my limbs, thank you. Although, I've been sitting here in pain all day with my damned left leg. Perhaps losing that one wouldn't matter so much.

It's sad to learn of people being so completely out of touch with the best of what life can be.

I don't want to get too esoteric, but what is it that life can offer? I sincerely think people are becoming increasingly detached from real-life experiences. They're driven to beliefs and behaviors by algorithms, and group think. They wallow in silo's of opinion.

This has been happening, more slowly, for decades. The whole "women's rights" and "sexual revolution" being a couple of examples. But today, virtual worlds are filling in the gaps. And it's not just extreme stuff, it's basic living as we (our generation) would consider it.

Think about the "hook up" culture brought about by phone apps such as Tinder. For example, did you know there is a large increase of HIV cases in Houston, TX? People aren't afraid of HIV any more, because drug regimens now mean it's not a death sentence. Thinking in terms of the 50's, such a thing is quite shocking.

But of course, this guys perversion is something else. I'm likely being fanciful, but the guy is removed from his own body. He's gone abstract.

There was a novel, written in the 70's, the told the story of a group of people who found sexual pleasure from being victims of a car wreck. And roll forward a few decades...........here we are.

Simplicity, quiet, peace, nature.

Yeah, I think the boat has sailed on that.

Simplicity? We're all hooked up with complex technical options that act as though it's simple. Noise, angst, diversion, false narratives are common, and even embraced. Peace? Politically we're now in an era when you don't simply disagree with someone on a point or philosophy. Instead, we HATE our opponents, we put them down, question their motives. Nature? Plastic. Enough said.

We live in times where we value fellow man less and less.

Only if you let it. Cable 'news' will only deliver noise, angst, diversion, false narratives. Anything of real value has to be sought elsewhere.

I strongly disagree - and in fact think this is the most dangerous belief in society today. In fact, much more of what you describe happen outside of "cable news". It's just that the narrative has changed, and people choose to believe an alternative just because. Nothing on so called "alternative media" is any more honest or transparent. It's a grift.

The article of "The Guardian" I've linked in my comment #5 states that Hopper "admitted three charges of possessing extreme pornographic images relating to videos from a website called the EunuchMaker".
...
Marius Gustavson who ran the website, led "an extreme body modification ring which carried out male castration, pen.s removal and other procedures on people as young as 16".

Gustavson was jailed for life with a minimum tern of 22 years for leading this body modification ring.

Edited, since one word was not displayed before.
