We get a bit downbeat at times heh? - but there must be many with good memories. We had discipline for sure but it only ever came from the throat region not the arm; fist or stick?
I was born living next to my maternal grandmother and great eldest aunt one close street away. we had 3 kids ; great aunts daughter two who all lived with her hubby also. And second aunt - youngest with young son born out of wedlock and living with the above maternal grandmother. We sorta ran the street?? There were a few scuffles along the way of course but nothing fatal or life threatening and all parties were chastised equally - no fields apart from nearby parks but we played in the bombed sites of the unfortunate houses that got hit during WWII.
My fathers father was not a healthy man lived with his wife alone in a few suburbs away. We were called upon to move to support. Nobody was particularly happy but duty was duty. No kids ever played in our new street - I think a few lived there but always kept in doors. Consequently we marched back to the old suburbs each day to continue our alliances. Nothing fancy at Xmas simple one off toys and homemade decorations but we felt safe and comfortable ; well fed and loved??
