Surveillance. A question for you.

It doesn’t bother me, in fact I feel better. I have no intention of doing anything wrong. If it proves that someone else did or didn’t do something, that‘s great. Surveillance can also do things like spot places where someone who has gone missing has been.

Neither. I'm not conscious of the surveillance as I go about my business, so I don't feel watched. I don't feel safer because surveillance can't prevent me from being assaulted or my phone being snatched by some scumbag doing a drive-by on a bicycle. Moreover, police can rarely identify those kind of scumbags even if they bother to review a recording of their crime.

I think I just said that surveillance is basically useless. The only times it isn't is when major crimes are captured, i.e. mass shootings and armed robberies. They're also good for reviewing auto accidents that result in injury, death, or major property damage.

Well, cameras at banks are a necessity. I understand that.
 
I like when there is a monitor up so you can see that you're on camera. Often I'll just wave at it, but sometimes I do use it as a mirror. If I could do slight tricks I would. I think that would be fun.
 
Mask wearing people on Halloween eve make it a perfect time for a masked mugger to not be looked at suspiciously as they surreptitiously lift someone's wallet........in view of camera? No problem.

Misusing any work information would surely be a sackable offence.
 
I think I've been conditioned long enough that being surveilled does not bother me anymore. At least when something happens, such as a mugging or murder, there's more of a chance the perpetrator(s) will be found.
 
It sure feels like people are getting scary.

They want everyone else to be monitored and treated as guilty until proven innocent, yet suspect that their new toaster is listening to them. I picture a home where the eyes are cut out of every picture just in case.

Why is paranoia so high while others deserve no courtesy or privacy at all? It sounds like mice in a cage cowering under the straw with eyes tightly shut, shivering.

It could be that people see it as an invasion of privacy, and that would be true for me if I was being surveilled at home, but in a store, that's a different issue entirely. Stores need to maintain order and control shop lifting. We can't expect them to just hope that all their customers will be honest and civil. Public areas like streets and parks need to be safe and crime free. Maintaining order and safety requires monitoring.

Where surveillance crosses over into invasion of privacy is an issue to keep in mind, but I don't think we are at that point yet.

I think it depends on where you live. I understand that surveillance in England is very intense from certain shows I‘ve watched. Whether thats true or not idk. But now that there are cell phones, there is very little privacy IMO.

Same for me. The bank branch here in our village and the stores in the city.
