Survey: Half of America Thinks The Stench of Pot Is A problem

I'm with treeguy and will add that I'd much rather have to deal with someone stoned on weed than stoned on alcohol. Especially strangers out in public.

Don't like the smell of pot, cigars, cigarettes or pipe, but...……...recreational pot is becoming, and fast, very, very popular in the U.S.. IOW, some things people, young and old/older, can't get away from.

I'm curious about the headlines -Survey: Half of America Thinks The Stench of Pot Is A problem

This infers all Americans were polled, in order to arrive at he number as "half".

I followed a link in the above article to get details on the survey itself,

Methodology: PSB, in partnership with Civilized, Burson Cohn & Wolfe (BCW), and BuzzFeed News, conducted online interviews with 1,000 US adults (age 21+) and 602 Canadian adults (age 19+) to explore views on cannabis and to determine general habits and behaviors of cannabis consumers and nonconsumers.

Oversamples were conducted to reach a higher number of cannabis consumers (yielding 471 total consumers in the US and 371 total consumers in Canada). Interviews were conducted between March 12 and March 21, 2019.

How does a poll involving so few people actually providing opinions compared to the vast number of Americans over 21 , warrant a claim of "Half of America"?

The smell of pot has changed over the years. It's kind of hard for me to describe, but in the 70's it smelled more "plant like" and now it just smells like horrible stinky sweat. I don't smoke weed, but I imagine it's because of different strains they have now and cross breeding?

But I agree that smoke from cigarrettes, cigars and pot just stinks. Now, there are some pipe tobaccos I like and also wood fires.

Smoke & odor is smoke & odor wether it's from cigarettes, cigars, pipes, fire pits etc. Even heavily scented products like perfume, detergents, air fresheners stink and can make me sick.

Not fond of anything polluting the air either, no matter what it is.

Wouldn't make for attention-grabbing headlines if it said .. 1000 people ..:D

RadishRose, I agree with you. Anything with a headline saying "Half of America" is suspect right away, plus what about the use of the word "Stench?" If somebody asked people if they like the stench of roses, I wonder how many would say yes, they like it.

Some of these surveys are really hokey.

I think the stench of tobacco is a far bigger problem. I'm glad Austin bans it, just about everywhere, in public.

I agree. It stinks. When they first banned indoor smoking where I worked I was elated. But then people would step right outside the front door and stand around smoking. So whenever I went in or out of the building I'd take a deep breath before I got near the smokers and hold it until I got far enough past them before I breathed again. It was like trying to swim the length of a pool underwater. Finally they made the smokers take their breaks out back by the dumpster where they belonged. There needs to be a nationwide federal law that the only place you can smoke outside is right next to a dumpster and you must keep one hand in contact with the dumpster the entire time you are smoking.

Yes, Sunny, more like click-bait. LOL, I considered going into the definition of "stench" since what is one person's stench can be another person's "delightful fragrance". You made that point perfectly.

Something is always going to smell bad to some people, even though it’s some thing that’s needed.

Last year we had a terrible “stench” in northeast Fresno where I live....I live about 2 blocks from some almond orchards and my whole subdivision used to be orchards about 20 years ago.

Here is the answer to what stunk!!

Does it still stink or did they move it?

It doesn't warrant that claim, like others here have suggested, the poll is bogus, click-bait and overly dramatic to have a catchy headline by using the word "stench".

The poll was obviously conducted by those with an anti-cannabis agenda. The claim is exaggerated, aside from the small number of people representing "half of America", I'd be curious to see the wording in the questions of that poll and who they targeted.

It's legal now medicinally and for recreation when I live, and I have seen and smelled it in public less than I did back in the '60s when it was still illegal. I agree with the others that the scent is much better than that of cigarettes and like Ruthanne, I actually like the pleasant, more natural odor.

To be honest, this "poll" sounds like a bunch of *****. First, when was the last time you were walking down the street and smelled pot? An hour ago, Um, maybe NEVER!! Well, apparently 100% of everybody in the US & Canada has. Not only that, but everybody in North America is acutely aware of the aroma of cannabis versus a cigar, pipe tobacco, a bakery, paint store, or 10,075 other odors. Cannabis does have a distinctive aroma. But the idea that you can't walk down a street without being overcome by the smell of cannabis is a little much. For all those in this forum, who state that cannabis reeks, when was the last time you smelled it? I haven't smelled it in the last 50 years. This "poll" sounds like someone's personal political agenda.
