What's going on in Syria right now. Over the last 1/2 day some reports have Syrian rebels making major gains. Other reports say a coup is in progress with fighting in Damascus.

What to know about sudden rebel gains in Syria’s 13-year war and why it matters

Regardless of what it's situation where others can come in and exploit the situation. Hopefully this doesn't become another issue for anyone to deal with and the country finds peace.

According to one article I read some of Assad’s biggest supporters are very busy fighting other wars. Turkey which supports the Syrian rebels is happy to see Assad get his behind kicked. This is what I have read.

I read last night that Assad had escaped from Damascus on a private jet, but not long after that, they were showing a map of the tracking of the plane, and it apparently turned around because of some kind of problem and was flying back towards Homs when it disappeared off the radar.
The plane went from an altitude of over 15,000 feet to around 1,000 feet and then just disappeared. The map looked like the plane was in the mountains, and later there was a report of an explosion in one of the small villages in that vicinity, which they thought might have been a plane crash.

This morning, it seems like no one really knows much, and some reports are saying that Assad escaped, and some saying that he died in the plane crash.
As far as I have seen, there is no official statement yet; but they are saying that the Syrian government has collapsed, whether Assad is alive or dead.
People are being released from prison who have been there for almost 40 years, and have no idea what has happened in the world during that time. They thought they were being rescued by Saddam Hussein.

As far as I know, Assad was backed by Russia and Iran. Russia is too busy fighting Ukraine now and Iran is weakened by Israeli attacks.

The rebels were part of Al Qaeda at one point, but read that they recently are changing their image on religious rule, tolerance, etc.

Neither sounds great to me.

Assad has fallen but I don't know what will replace him. Putin will be challenged as he was allied with Syria and has his own issues with the ongoing war in the Ukraine. I don't know what's going to happen everywhere. There seems to be more instability than I can analyze.

So al Assad has left the country. A lot of people now feel free, but freedom means something different to different people. Some people will feel free to even scores, while others will wish for the type of freedom al Assad provided. The range of outcomes, ranges from anarchy to a severely restricted society.

It is almost certain, the future of Syria will not be friendly to the west, which Russia and Iran are well aware, imo.

No politics in this thread, so I will say simply that the Israel/US axis is what happened.

Yup. I think the revolution only got rid of one problem child with another soon to be problem child.

I'm assuming the rebels will be worse than Assad. Changes of administration there are about power not progress.

That's what I've heard. I think Syria has a strong ISIS presence and many groups there have some associations or roots in Al-Qaeda
