I'd be scouring the area for the truck with a mismatched tailgate

Maybe check with authorities on vehic registrations in the area on the years that had that style (????)

Hopefully Walmart has Cameras in the car park... they're everywhere in our supermarket car parks.. What a piece of garbage... but it seems people are doing this all the time at the moment, stealing everything because they can't get to buy it... not excusing them, a thief is a thief is a damn thief! 🤨

A few decades ago, I had this beater Datsun pickup
Whoever had it before me installed a cobbled up stereo...wires hanging
A thieving neighbor kid stole it one night
Brought it back
Said it didn't work
Gutsy little turd

Told him the next door guy had a better one
Didn't mention the 12g shotgun he had behind the door
 
Walmart has cameras. I was waiting for someone in the parking lot and just for the hey, I counted 14 cameras on the building. Who knows how many more on light poles, etc.?

The police can request the videos of those cameras placed near your sons truck and hopefully identify the thief.
 
I would think that the Walmart security cameras would have a record of this. Even though most tailgates come off fairly easily, it would still almost take 2 people to do it quickly, and they would probably have a truck right there to put it in. This should qualify as "unusual" activity in the parking lot, and the police should be able to get some good clues quickly from the cameras.
 
I know someone that had his tailgate taken from his driveway but the thief kindly left him the dented replacement from his own vehicle. Same make, same model.

These days even if someone sees it happening it's a case of say nothing, don't get involved. Sad.
