Take off your shoes, please. What is the rule at your house for guests ?

I have hardwood floors, and no children crawling around. So, no I don't expect anyone to remove shoes. I do have a few Asian friends
who will not wear shoes inside. I keep scuffs for them in a basket near the door with their names on them.
If I had wall to wall carpeting, the rule would be no shoes.

...as i do... wall to wall carpetting in my house.. except the foyer and the kitchen

It's up to the guest. Sometimes I ask people NOT to take off their shoes, if my floor is a bit dirty.

What I don't like is being offered slippers in someone's home. Who wore them before? How clean are they? Ugh.

I do have (laundered) heavy socks on hand, in various sizes, just in case someone wants to take off their shoes.

One more thing to consider!?

I don't have guests in my home but I don't wear shoes inside. This is one of the rare things I do that was done with my upbringing. I keep shoes by the door. I may wear them to bring groceries in but then they are off. And my work shoes, stay in the car. I switched my shoes out on work days. Work shoes don't even get near the door.

My cats use the litterbox and walk everywhere, but I don't have a problem with that. 🤷‍♀️

Generally I don’t ask, but almost everyone removes their shoes. It’s a much more western Canada custom. In Ontario, my family didn’t remove shoes. My daughters were raised in the west and live in Ontario now. Shoes off, please.

Workmen come with blue paper booties.

If going to someone’s home, I bring my own slippers.

No matter the weather, grit and small stones can still be tracked in. I still remember a friend who was upset after a woman refused to remove her high heels and left the heel imprint in the new wooden floors.

Not enough of an issue here. Non-existent snow and little mud

cultural norms vary, however. I try to stay aware of ppl’s customs…. Folks from East Indian /oriental countries prefer shoes left at the door
Probably because of rugs, I bet. Carpet was a stubborn trend in American homes up until fairly recently, so dirty shoes drove ladies of the house (and Mr. Moms) crazy. But most people nowadays think carpeting is disgusting, and shoes not so much.

Most people don't think carpeting is disgusting.. where have you got that from ? it's certainly disgusting if you don't clean it..
