Taking the grandkids shopping tomorrow....maybe

The plan was for me to take the step(ish) granddaughters, 9 and 12, out for a shopping trip tomorrow, to get something(s) special for back-to-school. It's something we do every year.

The 9-year-old is excited; she's still my cheerful little buddy. The 12-year-old, who has morphed into a moody pre-teen with a perpetual <shrug> and "I don't know" as an answer to everything "isn't sure she wants to go". Fine.

I can sure remember when I had one of those moody pre-teens at home. Now I have *three* more of them coming up and I'm not sure I have the strength for it. The shrugging, the side-eyes, the I-will-not-be-pleased-with-ANYTHING!, The odd thing is that it skipped my granddaughter. She wasn't the moody type. The two 9-year-olds will be morphing to the Dark Side in a couple of years, I fear. I have a few more years before the 6-year-old gets there.

The only thing that keeps me from screaming is that experience shows that they'll turn back into perfectly delightful girls after a while......I hope, I hope, I hope.

It’s a tough time that we all go through.

You know them better than I do but would it be possible to give the sullen, moody, too cool for school member of the shopping party a cash allowance and let them make their own choices/decisions.

If you are at a mall give them space and a time to meet at a specific time and place for lunch or snacks while you and the junior memeber of the team have a less stressful shopping experience.

Good luck, make good memories!

I am giving them each $200 cash. It's theirs to spend as they please. If the 12 year old opts not to go, she'll have her money to spend later.

I used to take my granddaughter and her two stepsisters on a start-of-school spree. We always had a full day of it and a great time.

We three would also go prom and homecoming dance dress shopping, first the two older ones and then the younger one a few years later.

It keeps me younger and my bank account lighter....

jujube, wanna be MY grandma? Lol. Really, this too will pass...before you know it, they will be real people. In September our grandaughter will be 34 and will be getting married. She lives in another state and I miss her and wish we could play with Barbies again! The wedding is here so we will be able to attend, fingers crossed.
